Front Line Staff/Administration Participant - Gunflint Ranger District
Position Summary
Participants will spend the summer working and learning within the administration program of the Superior National Forest. The work includes performing various tasks to support district staff and interacting with the public in our visitor information center. Participants will utilize a variety of USDA specific computer programs and assist with issuing visitor permits for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) and permits for gathering a variety of forest products.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Participants will assist with educating Forest visitors in Wilderness Ethics and Leave No Trace Principles to help prevent resource damage and minimize impact on the land. Duties will include answering phones and directing calls to appropriate staff, responding to emails, performing data entry, maintaining interpretive displays, stocking interpretive store products, and participating in district meetings and required trainings.
This position's primary Duty Station is the Gunflint Ranger District in Grand Marais, MN. Dependent on the needs of Superior National Forest, work will also occur at the Tofte Ranger District in Tofte, MN. A Forest Service vehicle will be available for travel between the two Duty Stations. Duties and responsibilities are the same at both locations.
Marginal Duties
Distribute mail and packages to district staff; assist with keeping visitor area neat and clean.
Required Qualifications
A personal vehicle is not required but may be helpful.
This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.
Preferred Qualifications
- Customer service experience is preferred but not required
- A willingness to work as part of a team is beneficial.

Living Accommodations
Grand Marais accommodations include two bunkhouses that house up to 10 tenants each: participants will share a double room - single may be available but are limited; restrooms are shared but designed for single occupancy with a locking door; kitchen and living room are shared spaces; laundry facilities are available in each bunkhouse; single gender bunkhouses may be available. Tofte accommodations include four separate houses/cabins with varying occupancy; participants will share a double room - single may be available but are limited; restrooms are shared but designed for single occupancy with a locking door; kitchen and living room are shared spaces; laundry facilities are available on the compound; single gender housing units may be available.
Compensation
- $450/week - Living Allowance
- $1100 To/From Travel Allowance - paid once with the first check.
All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
