Position Summary:

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is seeking a person to serve as a Conservation Intern to assist our Edwards

Aquifer Refugia Program, located at the Uvalde National Fish Hatchery in Uvalde, Texas.

The position requires a person familiar with fish and wildlife, including threatened

and endangered aquatic species. This position will focus on one of the major objectives of the program, to

collect and maintain species in captivity in the course of developing and providing a fully functioning refugia for

species covered in the Edwards Aquifer Habitat Conservation Plan. The intern will work alongside federal

biologists and biological technicians with the husbandry of aquatic salamander, invertebrate, fish, and plant species. Duties will

include assisting with the daily feeding of captive organisms, aquarium cleaning and maintenance, water quality testing and data logging. There may be the potential to assist with the field collection of organisms in spring-fed rivers. Candidates for this position will need to be comfortable lifting up to 50lbs on unstable terrain, potentially working outside and wading in flowing water.

Valid driver's license required.

Vehicle for personal travel required.

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans aged 35 or younger, at the start of the position. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Intern Benefits:

Living Allowance $412.00 per week

One-time $1,100.00 travel allowance

It is SCA's policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared results prior to the position's start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position start date will be delayed due to non-compliance.
