Individual Placement - Bio Science Technician

Position Summary

The incumbent serves as a biological science technician (Bio tech) for the Saratoga National Fish Hatchery. Incumbent main responsibility is to assists with the Wyoming toad-rearing program. Incumbent will also assist with other fish hatchery duties. Other hatchery duties include but are not limited to feeding, cleaning raceways, pawning, and other duties as required. The Wyoming toad program consists of a breeding population of about 110 toads and a toadlet population of approximately 900. This position will be responsible for the daily care of these toads from hatching eggs to the release of adults the following year. The toad building consists of 76, 45-gallon tanks holding the toad population. The new Bio tech will be responsible for feeding the toads, cleaning of tanks, and raising insects to feed the toads. Incumbent assists with the Wyoming toad-rearing program and assists in record keeping for all aspects of toad culture and husbandry.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

* Provide all aspects of animal husbandry and maintenance, including feeding, cleaning, and monitoring animal health. * Assist with propagation of toads including hormone injections, counting, and monitoring eggs, cleaning and feeding tadpoles. * Assists with collection of wild insects and husbandry of feeder insects to feed toads. Insects include roaches, soldier fly larvae (phoenix worms), bean beetles, flour beetles, crickets, and possibly others as deemed appropriate.

• Personal vehicle required.
• Willingness to work independently and with a team.
• Comfortable living and working in a remote setting.

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference given to candidates with degree major or professional experience in Biology, Resource Management.

Living Accommodations

Three-bedroom one bath home with washer/dryer. Fully furnished with complete cookware set.

Compensation

• $400 per week living allowance
• $70 per week commuting allowance
• Travel allowance of $1,100
• Housing Provided on site.
• Eligible for the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority upon successful completion of position (640hrs minimum of service)

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
