Position Summary

The Staff Accountant is responsible for functions that support the financial activities of the organization. This includes preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, financial statements, maintaining financial records, ensuring compliance with relevant accounting standards, and supporting the finance department in strategic decision-making. The Staff Accountant plays a key role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial data, assisting in audits, and providing insightful financial analysis to management.

This is a remote position with an annual salary range of $53,000 - $87,000.

Responsibilities:

  • Financial Reporting:
    • Prepare journal entries, reconcile General Ledger and bank accounts, prepare and reconcile trial balances, etc.
    • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (balance sheets, profit and loss statements, cash flow reports).
    • Assist in preparing reports for external auditors and regulatory agencies.
    • Maintain accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with accounting principles and regulations.
  • Account Reconciliation:
    • Perform reconciliations of bank accounts, general ledger accounts, and other financial transactions.
    • Investigate and resolve discrepancies in financial data.
  • Accounts Payable & Receivable:
    • Support accounts payable and receivable functions, as needed
    • Ensure that all invoices are paid and received on time, and track outstanding payments and receivables, as needed.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting:
    • Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and financial forecasts.
    • Monitor budget adherence, alerting management to variances and proposing corrective actions.
  • Tax Compliance:
    • Assist in preparing tax filings and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal tax regulations.
    • Support the annual tax return preparation and audits.
  • Internal Controls & Auditing:
    • Ensure that financial processes and transactions comply with internal controls and organizational policies.
    • Assist in internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation and supporting evidence.
  • Financial Analysis & Support:
    • Provide financial insights and analysis to management for strategic decision-making.
    • Identify financial trends, variances, and opportunities for cost savings.
  • Other Duties:
    • Assist in special projects or ad-hoc financial analysis as needed.
    • Support the finance team in the implementation of new accounting systems or improvements to existing processes.

Requirements:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required).
    • Professional certification (CPA, CMA, or equivalent) is a plus.
  • Experience:
    • 5+ years of experience in accounting or financial analysis.
    • Experience with nonprofit accounting preferred.
    • Experience with accounting and other systems software (e.g., Intaact, Bill.com, Nexonia, ADP, SalesForce) is a plus.
    • In-depth knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and financial reporting standards.
  • Skills & Competencies:
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other financial software. Advanced MS Excel skills including pivot tables preferred.
    • Ability to communicate complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
    • Strong time management and multitasking skills.
