Position Summary

Build your hands-on preservation trades skills at multiple National Historic Sites through projects addressing a range of preservation needs, primarily carpentry and preservation maintenance. Crew members will have the opportunity to develop their skills in several preservation and general trades, including carpentry, window restoration, wood bridge repair, cedar shingle roof repairs, and other preservation maintenance tasks. The ideal candidate is excited about hands-on trades work and should be able to demonstrate or discuss their interest in the preservation field.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Build your hands-on preservation trades skills at multiple National Historic Sites through projects addressing a range of preservation needs, primarily carpentry and preservation maintenance. Crew members will have the opportunity to develop their skills in several preservation and general trades, including carpentry, window restoration, wood bridge repair, cedar shingle roof repairs, and other preservation maintenance tasks. The ideal candidate is excited about hands-on trades work and should be able to demonstrate or discuss their interest in the preservation field. Crew members must be able to commit to the position from June 23 - November 21, 2025, with weekends and federal holidays off.

Western Pennsylvania:

  • Flight 93 National Memorial
  • Friendship Hill National Historic Site
  • Fort Necessity National Historic Site
  • Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site

Required Qualifications

  • Interest in historic preservation trades
  • Age restrictions: 18 - 30 (or 35 for Veterans)
  • Must be able to commit to project dates
  • Physical effort is heavy to moderate for this position and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 lbs, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions
  • Must be able and willing to work outside in various temperatures and weather conditions.
  • Willing and able to use hand and power tools to complete projects

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

This position is NOT AmeriCorps eligible.

  • Some preservation, carpentry, or general trades experience
  • Experience working on a team

Hours

40 per week

Living Accommodations

  • Shared Park housing provided

Compensation

  • $600 Weekly Living allowance
  • $650 one-time Travel Allowance to/from project site
  • $500 Professional Development stipend

  • All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
