TheStudentConservationAssociation(SCA)isthelargestproviderofhands-onenvironmentalconservationprogramsforyouthandyoungadults.Programparticipants protect and restorenationalparks,marinesanctuaries,culturallandmarks,andcommunitygreenspacesacrossthecountry.
ProgramDescription:
The internwillspendthesummerworkingwith Forest Service crews andlearningabout theRecreationand Visitor Information Programsin the Mt. Baker Ranger District.Mosttime will be spentinfrontcountryrecreationwith opportunities to participate in Wilderness and Trails projects.
Maintainingandrestoringsitesthatvisitorsuseforrecreationalpurposeshelpstopreventresourcedamageandminimizeimpactontheland.Facilitiesmaintenanceisanecessarywaytominimizesanitationimpactsthroughouttheforest.EducatingvisitorsonLeaveNoTraceprinciples willreducenegativeimpactsontheMt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.
Theinternwillspendtheirsummeras part of theForestService team,and willbeexposedtothediverserangeofcareeropportunitieswithintheUSForestService.
Assigneddutieswillincludethefollowing:
  • MaintainssanitaryconditionsatdevelopedsitesandroadsidedispersedsitesandWildernesscampingareas.
  • Performsbasicmaintenancetaskacrossdistrictrecreationsitesincludingtrailmaintenance.
  • Installsandmaintainsinformationboards,travelsigns,regulatorysignsandothersignsassociatedwithrecreationsitesandsafety.
  • ProvidesdetailedinformationaboutrecreationopportunitiestoForestvisitorsandexplainsForestServiceregulations.
  • Collectsvisitorusedata.
  • Otherdutiesasassigned.

The Glacier Public Service Center on the Mt. Baker Scenic Byway, State Route 542, serves visitors headed into the northern reaches of the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and North Cascades National Park. Civilian Conservation Corps built the center in 1938, which is representative of the Cascadian style of architecture. It is listed on the federal register of historic places.
