Position Summary

To support Moreau Lake State parks initiative to educate and inspire the public, foster a connection to nature and maintain our trails for the communities who use them. Access to the outdoors for people of all abilities with the guidance of an educator at a low cost. Our nature center increases patron awareness to native plants, animals, and proper outdoor ethics at their own leisure. We provide a variety of low-cost programs for all ages and abilities to the public.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

This role involves educating the public, school groups and other community members about nature, leading outdoor experiences and caring for the animals housed in the nature center. We currently have 6 native turtles, 1 tortoise, 3 snakes, and an owl that joins us in the summertime. The duties also include assisting the supervisor in trail maintenance to ensure safe outdoor recreation for the public on over 40 miles of MLSP’s trails. Trail maintenance could include using hand tools or being around a chainsaw.


Goal 1: Education and public engagement-deliver weekly educational programs and develop at least one new educational program per month to help increase visitor attendance numbers per month.


Goal 2: Animal Care-making sure that animal care duties are performed daily. i.e. feeding, cleaning, and monitoring animal health.


Goal 3: Trail Maintenance- in collaboration with the supervisor, ensure that assigned trails are maintained to safety standards.


Marginal Duties


Required Qualifications

Someone with a strong background in outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, wildlife observations.

Passion for environmental stewardship.


Preferred Qualifications

Communication, interpersonal skills, organization, flexibility/adaptability, animal care, leadership.

Ecology, environmental or conservation knowledge.

Compensation

$400/week Living Allowance


Amount of the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award being offered for successful completion of the member’s term of service: $7,395

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
