Biological Technician - Red Wolf Recovery Program

Position Summary

The position is with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Red Wolf Recovery Program based out of Manteo, NC. Red wolves were declared extinct in the wild in 1980 after the last red wolves were captured and placed in captivity to start a captive breeding program. In 1987, 8 red wolves were released into the wild in eastern North Carolina, an area now known as the Eastern North Carolina Red Wolf Population (ENC RWP). The Red Wolf Recovery Program operates under the Revised Red Wolf Recovery Plan published in 2023 with a goal of recovering red wolves in the wild. The individual in this position will be involved in several management tasks directly tied to working towards that goal.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

- Independently conduct the care and feeding of captive; red wolves and temporarily held wild canids in both; permanent and temporary acclimation pens. Care and; feeding consists of providing food (whole prey natural; food items such as frozen rabbits, road killed deer, etc.); and water on a set schedule, administering medications; in their food, cleaning scats out of the enclosures and; observing canids for signs of injury or illness, etc. - Independently conduct the observation of landscape; use and movement patterns of wild canids via tracks,; remote sensing cameras (including reviewing, posting; and summarizing footage), scat, radio telemetry and red; wolf sightings. - Use various programs (Field Maps, Survey 123, etc.) to; enter data in the field and in an office setting for canid; locations, remote camera information, acclimation pen; information, mortalities, etc. - Assist with the handling and processing of wild and; captive canids including taking temperature, pulse and; respiration, physical restraint, administering vaccines,; taking body measurements, etc. and recording; associated data. - Independently conduct routine maintenance of; enclosures such as regularly inspecting enclosures,; maintaining solar power, repairing fencing, filling in; holes, etc. to maintain them in working order. - Effectively and quickly communicate with permanent; staff when there are issues that need to be addressed; with individual canids or facilities that are beyond; routine. - Assist with other aspects of red wolf management, as; directed.


Required Qualifications

- Valid driver’s license. - Defensive Driving certification within the last 3 years or ability to pass an online course at no cost prior to operating a government vehicle. - Ability to work alone. - Ability to perform the key duties of this position. - Key tasks involve the carrying of up to 50 pounds. - A personal vehicle will be needed to travel from the bunkhouse to the office (approximately 15 miles).


This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.


Preferred Qualifications

- Experience in radio telemetry. - ArcGIS programs experience (e.g., Field Maps, Survey 123). - Previous use of remote sensing cameras. - Familiarity with care and feeding of animals, particularly wild animals. - Familiarity with basic maintenance of fencing and the use of tools.


Hours

40 per week


Living Accommodations

The living accommodations are in a U.S. Fish and Wildlife; Service bunkhouse approximately 15 miles from the; office. The bunkhouse is a regular multi-bedroom,; multi-bathroom house within a neighborhood a few; blocks from the beach in Nags Head, NC. The member; will likely be living in a shared bedroom/bathroom,; potentially with another person working for the Red Wolf; Recovery Program. The bunkhouse has a communal; kitchen, living room, laundry room, etc.


Compensation

Living Allowance - $800/week; Housing is provided at no cost to the member

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
