Position Summary

Please read: We strongly encourage applicants to apply who: 1) live on island 2) possess previous knowledge of Native Hawaiian plants. Apply to join the Haleakala National Park botany team for a botany internship. Interns work in the park plant nursery, propagate native plants, and control invasive plant species under the direction of National Park Service staff. Start date is flexible.

Schedule

December 1, 2024 - May 3, 2025

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include: Helping in the Park nursery, propagating and transplanting native plants for restoration, controlling alien plant invasions using mechanical and chemical means and hiking and camping in remote backcountry locations Monday through Friday.

Marginal Duties

Other duties may include monitoring native species.

Required Qualifications

This position requires that applicants be physically fit and able to work in challenging outdoor conditions. Much of the work is done at an altitude of 6,000ft to 10,000ft.

Living Accommodations

Housing may or may not be available so local applicants are preferred. Please inquire about this during the interview if you would need Park housing.

Compensation

$1,300 - one time RT travel allowance

$450 - weekly living allowance

$2,375 - duty related travel (available for local intern selections to use for commuting costs)

AmeriCorps eligible ($2,817.14 Education Award; 675 hours required)

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
