Internship - Bird Survey Intern at Naval Air Station Patuxent River

Position Summary

Spend your spring and summer in Maryland, playing a vital role at Naval Air Station Patuxent River as a Bird Survey Intern. Interns perform crucial tasks in support of our mission.

Schedule

May 6, 2025 - August 25, 2025

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Survey Bald Eagle, Osprey, and other raptor nests on the installation, 50%; Conduct acoustic bat surveys 15%. Conduct habitat management for state-listed butterfly species and surveys for federally listed Monarch butterflies, 20%.

Marginal Duties

Conduct weekly checks and maintenance of nest boxes, recording species usage and banding fledgling birds, 10%; Assist with environmental education outreach, 5%.

Required Qualifications

Valid driver license; Personal vehicle recommended Schedule: A Monday-Friday, 40 hour/week schedule is expected. Some evening and night work will be necessary to document certain bird species.

Preferred Qualifications

Local candidates are preferred due to lack of housing; however, non-local candidates will be considered if they can find their own housing. Ideal candidate has the ability to work with minimal supervision in areas with poisonous plants and animals, allergens, temperature extremes, and inclement weather, Minimum of 2 years of college in the area related to ornithology, wildlife management/biology, natural resources or other biological sciences; experience in habitat survey; and experience with bird identification (sight and/or sound).

Compensation

Weekly living allowance: $350; One-time travel allowance: $1100; Eligible for a 450-hour AmeriCorps education award worth $1,956.35 , upon successful completion of service.; Public Land Credits are available upon successful completion of this term for members ages 18-30.
