About us:

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, community green spaces, and much more across the country.

Project Location: Johnson City, Texas

Position Dates: September 1, 2025 - July 11, 2026 = 45 weeks

Position Description:

One 45-week Individual Placement in support of frontline interpretation and education at Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park.

Job Title: Interpretive Services

Participant will assist park staff at Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park by providing accurate information on park resources, directions, special events, park safety, and by providing interpretive programs to the public. As a result, the intern will provide visitors an opportunity to have a safe, enjoyable, and educational park experience.

Individual will be an integral member of the park's Interpretation team by assisting in offering excellent customer service and interpretive opportunities for park visitors. Here the tasks they will perform:

  • Meet and greet visitors
  • Answer visitor questions related to park resources, history, and legacy of Lyndon B. Johnson, Texas Hill Country, and other related topics.
  • Use brochures/maps/handouts to answer involved questions about resources in or near the park. Restock park literature when needed.
  • Explain Junior Ranger program and provide workbooks. Lead Junior Ranger badge ceremony.
  • Assist staff in offering formal or informal interpretive programming in Johnson City and/or LBJ Ranch. Programs will focus on park resources and the history associated with Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park.
  • Assist with interpretive demonstrations and special events.
  • Assist with staffing both visitor center (Johnson City & LBJ Ranch)
  • Assist in opening and closing visitor centers.

Qualifications: Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park is looking for individuals with the following skills:

  • Be friendly, outgoing, and patient
  • Have a welcoming and professional demeanor
  • Be able and willing to learn about the history of Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, President Johnson, “Lady Bird” Johnson, and the president's family.
  • Be able to follow National Park Service environmental & historic preservation rules
  • Enjoys working with the public
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent public speaking skills
  • Comfortable working with small and large groups
  • Works well both as a team and independently
  • Has an interest in history, education, and the environment

Physical Demands: Demands may include walking, standing, sitting at a desk, bending, reaching, walking and lifting.

Working Conditions: Work may be performed indoor and outdoor; Summer temperatures can reach into the 100s, though the average summer temperature is 92 degrees. The winter temperatures range from mid-twenties to thirties in the night (with occasional freezes) to fifties and sixties in the day.

Work Schedule: Individual is expect to work 40 hours per week. This can be split into one full day of 8 hours, or two half-days of 4 hours each in a week. Interns will work a predetermined schedule to include holidays and weekends. Individual Placement and supervisor will determine days expected on site at least two weeks in advance. Individual Placements should call their supervisor in case of illness or other unexpected happening that would prevent the individual to report to work.

Park Benefits: Individual Placements will be able to share the history of Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, the Texas Hill Country, and President Johnson and family with visitors from all over the world, while receiving insight and knowledge into National Park Service operations and opportunities to participate in National Park Service training. Also, will gain experience in customer service and protection and preservation of resources.

Training: Supervisor will provide orientation and training. The participant will be trained on Lyndon B. Johnson NHP's safety guidelines and regulations. Interns must follow the procedures listed in the Visitor Center Information Services' Job Safety Analysis
