About us:
The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, community green spaces, and much more across the country.
Position Dates: 7/7/2025 - 4/11/2026
The Individual Placements will work with the Houston Parks and Recreation Department's Natural Resources Management Division to restore forested habitat along waterways in City of Houston Parks. The project is part of the City's Riparian Restoration Initiative to restore forested riparian habitat within all parks adjacent to waterways.
Member Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Individual Placements will conduct invasive species removal and tree and understory plantings. They will conduct maintenance activities in the restored areas to support the establishment of the riparian forest.
Member Marginal Duties
- Invasive species removal
- Tree planting, staking, watering, and mulching
- Herbicide application
- Plant propagation
- Operating small equipment such as weed eaters
Member Preferred Qualifications:
- Qualifications that are desirable but not absolutely necessary.
- Some coursework within a Natural Resources Field
- Plant identification
- Comfortable working outside
- Invasive species removal
Member Compensation:
- $520per week (40 hour work week)
Local Candidates only; no housing provided.
This position qualifies for an AmeriCorps Education Award.
- All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
It is SCA's policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared results prior to the position's start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position's start date will be delayed due to non-compliance.

- Wildland Fire Work Pack Test - Arduous Duty
Physical requirements and working conditions of the member position:
- Must be able to lift 25 pounds
- Perform strenuous activities in harsh conditions
- Work in outdoor setting
