Individual Placement - CCI South Florida Land Conservation
Position Summary
Based out of The Nature Conservancy's (TNC's) Blowing Rocks Preserve in Hobe Sound, Florida, the CCI Land Conservation Member will develop a variety of skills relating to natural resource management and TNC's mission; “to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends.” Blowing Rocks Preserve is a 73-acre protected area located on a barrier island on the southeast coast of Florida. It is open to the public and hosts more than 50,000 visitors each year. Natural features at the preserve include maritime hammock, coastal strand, beach dune, coastal scrub, mangrove swamp, the Indian River Lagoon and Atlantic Ocean, Anastasia limestone rock formation outcroppings, and Sabellariid reefs.
This position is based in the Stewardship and Field Programs Department (SAF) of The Nature Conservancy's Florida Chapter (TNC). SAF is responsible for implementing and managing field conservation work across Florida and for stewardship of the Florida Chapter's network of preserves. This position is based at Blowing Rocks Preserve in Hobe Sound, FL. Blowing Rocks Preserve is one of four statewide campus preserves included in TNC Florida's Center for Conservation Initiatives (CCI) and is integral to CCI's Stewardship initiatives advancing natural resource management, cultivating discovery, developing our future conservationists, and connecting people and nature.
The CCI Land Conservation Individual Placemen participates in habitat management work at Blowing Rocks Preserve and on other TNC-owned and partners' lands, and conducts activities such as invasive species control, native plant propagation and planting, working with imperiled species, wildland fire management, marine debris management, and conducting applied conservation science and monitoring. Other stewardship responsibilities include assisting with habitat and species mapping and monitoring, water quality monitoring, sea turtle rescue, data management, and additional natural resource management activities. Preserve landscape duties include mowing, trimming, and trail maintenance.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
The CCI Land Conservation Individual Placement participates in habitat management work at Blowing Rocks Preserve and on other TNC-owned and partners' lands, and conducts activities such as invasive species control, native plant propagation and planting, working with imperiled species, wildland fire management, marine debris management, and conducting applied conservation science and monitoring. Other stewardship responsibilities include assisting with habitat and species mapping and monitoring, water quality monitoring, sea turtle rescue, data management, and additional natural resource management activities. Preserve landscape duties include mowing, trimming, and trail maintenance. The Individual Placement will be expected to participate in daily preserve operations, including opening and closing of the preserve, collecting and sorting trash and recycling, and public restroom upkeep. The intern will also assist with visitor management and public education and outreach including working with volunteers, school children, and other groups on a variety of projects such as shoreline cleanups, stewardship workdays, answering visitor questions, leading guided nature tours, and assisting with other educational and interpretive programming.
Marginal Duties
Additional objectives may be developed based on the intern's personal interests and/or skills. The individual Placement will develop and complete a project related to their position and present their work at the completion of their internship. This position is suitable for anyone with a keen interest in pursuing a career in land management and conservation.

Preferred Qualifications
General outdoor experience and comfortability/desire to be in the outdoors, and use of basic hand tools is desirable, but not required. Most important- strong desire to pursue a career in land management.

Living Accommodations
Position housing is provided. The CCI Land Conservation Individual Placement is provided with shared housing with 1 other TNC intern and occasional visiting staff, volunteers, and researchers in a recently renovated 3-bedroom bunkhouse that is located at the Bureau of Land Management's Jupiter Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area, just 2.5 miles away from Blowing Rocks Preserve. The Individual Placement is provided with their own private bedroom with a bathroom, shared living room, kitchen, outdoor living space, carport, laundry room with washer and dryer, and small herb/vegetable garden. The house is fully furnished and very comfortable; and it is located just steps away from the Jupiter Lighthouse, various scenic hiking trails, and the Jupiter Inlet. The Individual Placement is welcome to bring their own personal décor, bedding, and personal items to keep in their bedroom, bicycle, etc., and is responsible for providing their own necessary toiletries, laundry detergent, linens, towels, groceries, dish soap/dishwasher detergent, and any necessary paper products such as tissues, paper towels, etc. The CCI Land Conservation Intern has shared cleaning responsibilities at the bunkhouse and must agree to adhere to all housing rules. The CCI Land Conservation Intern is also responsible for basic landscape maintenance and upkeep at the bunkhouse including mowing, string-trimming, weeding, watering, etc.
Compensation
- Living allowance - $525 (35 hour work week)
- Onetime Relocation Travel Allowance - $1,100.00
