Wildlife Management Individual Placement - Haleakala National Park

Position Summary

Please read: Preference will be given to local candidates already residing in Hawaii.

This internship will work with the Wildlife Management team at Haleakala National Park, primarily focusing on invasive predator control.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Control introduced predators (primarily non-native rats, mongooses, and feral cats) via trapping to protect threatened and endangered birds and control pests, 75%; monitor birds (Hawaiian goose and Hawaiian petrel) for nesting activity and production of young, 20%. Daily solo hiking/backpacking over rugged, steep volcanic terrain at high elevations (6000-10,000 ft.) in harsh weather conditions and includes 3-4 day backcountry trips.

Marginal Duties

Data entry and other duties as assigned, 5%.

Required Qualifications

Must be in excellent physical condition - work occurs at high elevation (6000ft+).

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

40 per week

Living Accommodations

Local candidates with their own housing on Maui are preferred. Shared housing may be available for off-island candidates but is not guaranteed. Inquire at interview.

Compensation

$450 - weekly living allowance

$1,300 - one-time travel allowance

$2,375 - duty related travel (available for local intern selections to use for commuting costs)

$1,000 - monthly housing allowance ONLY for local candidates. If Park housing is available for a non-local candidate, they will receive free housing instead of a monthly housing stipend.

AmeriCorps eligible (450-hour Education Award)

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
