About us:

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and young adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, and community green spaces across the country.

Program Description:

Housing is provided. S130 and S190 (Wildland Firefighting Basic) will be provided within the first 60 days. S112 (Introduction to Chainsaw Operations) may be provided within the first 60 days. Professional Chainsaw training in the past is preferred

Required: candidates must have chainsaw experience

The Ordway-Swisher Biological Station is a year-round biological field station established for the long-term study and conservation of unique ecosystems through management, research, and education. This position will work closely with the Land Management Specialist and other station staff to complete various land management tasks throughout the station. The station has an active prescribed fire program, and as such, a major focus of this position will be to aid in the preparation of burn units as well as conducting controlled burns. Other major projects will include sandhill restoration, invasive plant control, road maintenance, debris removal, and data collection. Various other duties include upkeep and maintenance of station facilities, data entry, and assisting with public tours.

In this position, there will be 2 weeks of time off around the winter holidays due to the field station closing during that time.

AmeriCorps Enrollment Notice:
This position may be eligible for AmeriCorps enrollment. However, the SCA has not yet received confirmation of a grant award for this program. If funding is awarded, you may qualify for an AmeriCorps Education Award. If not, you will serve in a non-AmeriCorps role with the same living allowance and benefits. If selected, you will be updated on AmeriCorps funding status before your start date.

Member Qualifications:

. Driver's license

. Personal vehicle required.

Required: Candidates must have chainsaw experience.

Ability to work independently or in groups, and in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult or hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding work conditions.

Additional:

. Must be eligible to serve as an AmeriCorps Member. This includes:

. Being a citizen, permanent resident, or national of the United States;

. Being at least 18 years or older;

. Having a high school diploma or equivalent;

. Being willing to undergo National Service Criminal History Check, including criminal background, sex offender and FBI checks.
