Front Line Staff/Administration Intern - Tofte Ranger District

Position Summary

Participants will spend the summer working and learning within the administration program of the Superior National Forest. This work includes performing various tasks associated with public service and staffing at a visitor center. These positions assist with issuing a variety of permits including Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) visitor permits, gravel permits, and special use permit applications.

June 2, 2025 - August 22, 2025

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Participants will assist with educating Forest visitors in Wilderness Ethics and Leave No Trace Principles to help to prevent resource damage and minimize impact on the land. They will answer phones and direct calls to appropriate staff, respond to emails, perform data entry, maintain interpretive displays, stock interpretive store products, participate in district meetings and required trainings.

Marginal Duties

Deliver mail and packages to staff, assist with keeping the visitor area neat and clean.

Required Qualifications

Personal vehicles are not required but may be helpful.

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Customer Service experience is preferred but not required
  • A willingness to work as part of a team is beneficial

Hours

40 per week

Living Accommodations

Tofte accommodations include four houses/cabins that house various occupancy; each participant will share a double occupancy room (single rooms are limited); restrooms are shared but designed for single occupancy and have locking doors; kitchen and living rooms are shared; laundry facilities are available on the compound; single gender housing may be available.

Compensation

  • $450/week Living Allowance
  • $1,100 To/From Travel Allowance, paid once with first paycheck
  • Housing provided on site

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
