Position Summary

The SCA member will increase and enhance environmental education in Saratoga Spa State Park by developing and implementing new education programs and staffing the Creekside Classroom. The mission of the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) is to provide safe and enjoyable recreational and interpretive opportunities for all New York State residents and visitors and to be responsible stewards of our valuable natural, historic and cultural resources. The member will be providing safe and enjoyable environmental education programs to park patrons.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The Environmental Education Assistant will be trained to educate a wide variety of audiences about Saratoga Spa State Park’s resources. The Assistant will be responsible for developing new environmental education, geology and history programs for the public and school children to enjoy. The Environmental Education Assistant will be expected to help staff large events at the park such as Candlelight Walks, Fish Stocking, I Love My Park Day and Get Together and Get Outside Day. The assistant will also be expected to staff the Creekside Classroom, sometimes on weekends or evenings that will be determined ahead of time. The Environmental Education Assistant will be asked to represent Saratoga Spa State Park at tabling events in the region. The assistant will be encouraged to expand their skill set and their knowledge of local ecology during their service. Goal 1: Create, enhance and provide environmental education programs to park patrons Goal 2: Staff the Creekside Classroom Goal 3: Represent Saratoga Spa State Park at large events throughout the Capital Region


Marginal Duties

Supervision of the Restoration Ecologist, Assist with various restoration projects, vegetation monitoring, wildlife surveys, and working with volunteers


Required Qualifications

Public speaking Must be able to work with children unsupervised Environmental Education experience Community Service experience Valid driver's License and personal vehicle


Preferred Qualifications

The member must have a strong background in both natural history and New York ecology.


Hours

40 per week

Housing provided by Saratoga Spa State Park


Compensation

$435/week living allowance $7,395 AmeriCorps Education Award upon completion of 1,700 service hours

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
