Urban Designer & Planner - Transportation
NYC Urban Places is seeking an Urban Designer & Planner (5–7 years of experience) with a strong focus on transportation, corridor design, and public realm projects in complex urban environments.
This role is ideal for a multidisciplinary designer–planner who thrives at the intersection of mobility, safety, public space, engagement, and visual communication. The successful candidate will contribute to and lead components of transportation-focused urban design projects, from existing conditions analysis and concept development through graphics, reporting, and client presentation.
You will work within an integrated studio environment where planning, design, analytics, engagement, and visualization are developed together.

We integrate analysis, design, engagement, and implementation strategy within a single workflow to produce decision-ready, delivery-aware concepts.
Our work spans transportation safety initiatives, corridor planning, public realm frameworks, tactical demonstrations, and implementation-ready urban design across NYC and the tri-state region. We operate as a boutique studio within a global firm, pairing agility and design quality with interdisciplinary depth.

Pay Range
Benefits Summary: Regular full-time and part-time employees (working at least 20 hours per week) have access to medical, dental, and vision plans, a wellness program, health saving accounts, flexible spending accounts, 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase program, life and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, short-term/long-term disability plans, emergency travel benefits, tuition reimbursement, professional membership fee coverage and paid family leave. Your Responsibilities
- Lead and contribute to components of corridor, streetscape, safety, and transportation planning assignments.
- Conduct detailed existing conditions analysis, including mobility, safety, curbside operations, and public realm diagnostics.
- Develop urban design concepts that integrate multimodal transportation, safety principles, tactical interventions, and long-term capital vision.
- Produce high-quality graphics including illustrative plans, sections, linework drawings, diagrams, renderings, and before/after visualizations.
- Prepare and contribute to technical reports, narrative documentation, and visually compelling final deliverables.
- Support and lead multicultural engagement efforts, including stakeholder workshops, public meetings, and community-based outreach—particularly for transportation and safety projects.
- Contribute to tactical urbanism and demonstration project planning, including temporary installations and quick-build strategies.
- Collaborate within multidisciplinary teams including planners, landscape architects, transportation engineers, architects, and policy specialists.
- Support proposal development through graphics, writing, and technical input (this role will contribute to pursuits but is not expected to lead them).
- Strong urban design skills grounded in transportation systems, multimodal street design, and public realm strategy.
- Demonstrated experience leading multicultural engagement, particularly in urban transportation or safety-focused contexts.
- Experience with tactical urbanism, demonstration projects, and temporary installations.
- Excellent visual storytelling ability—translating analysis into clear, compelling graphics and narratives.
- Strong existing-conditions analytical skills and comfort synthesizing quantitative and qualitative data.
- Ability to lead tasks within larger projects and manage defined scopes of work.
- Proven ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Familiarity with projects in NYC and the broader tri-state region (NY, NJ, CT) is required.
- Bilingual (Spanish) proficiency is a plus.
- Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
- Proficiency in Rhino and/or other 3D modeling software.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD for linework and layout development.
- Experience with 3D rendering software.
- Strong graphic layout and presentation skills.
- GIS proficiency strongly preferred.
- Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or related field.
- 5–7 years of relevant professional experience.
- Experience working on NYC-based transportation, corridor, safety, or public realm projects required.
