Soil Cycle is a dynamic nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the Missoula community about soil health, composting, and sustainable food systems. We empower individuals to understand the critical role food systems and soil health play in climate resiliency, and to help them take action to create positive change in our local environment.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated intern to join our team and work alongside the Executive Director and Operations Manager to support the daily operations of our composting and educational facility in Missoula. This is a hands-on role where you’ll gain practical experience and deep insights into environmental stewardship, community organizing, and climate action.


What You’ll Learn - As an intern at Soil Cycle, you will:

Understand the connection between soil health and climate resiliency – Learn how local composting helps mitigate climate change and support food system sustainability.

Explore community-driven climate action – Discover the role community plays in addressing climate change and fostering long-term environmental health.

Get introduced to nonprofit operations – Gain a foundational understanding of nonprofit management, from operations to programming.

Develop key skills in:

  • Daily nonprofit operations management
  • Educational programming logistics and execution
  • Volunteer management and engagement
  • Community building, communication and outreach

Master human-powered composting – Learn about traditional and alternative composting methods, including hot piles, vermicomposting, bokashi composting, and general best practices for climate resiliency.

Understand soil science – Dive into the basics of soil health, monitoring, and management.


Your Responsibilities - As an intern, you’ll actively contribute to the success of Soil Cycle’s mission through the following tasks:

  • Oversee daily composting operations, including hot piles and vermicomposting
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director on program development and product distribution
  • Support the organization and implementation of new on-site projects and initiatives
  • Assist with event management, outreach, and marketing efforts to expand community presence
  • Help plan and execute educational programming for schools, businesses, and community groups

Position Details

  • Weekly commitment: 8-10 hours
  • Internship dates: January-May and August-December (with an option to extend)
  • Very flexible schedule, but on-site presence in Missoula is required
  • Start and end dates can be adjusted based on availability
  • This internship is not paid, but can count towards class credit at the University of Montana
