We’re looking for a Smart Metering Technical SME to join the Smart Energy Code Company (SECCo) in a high-profile technical leadership role.


About SECCo


Smart metering is a key enabler of the transition to a net-zero energy system, helping consumers make better use of their energy, reduce their bills and supporting more efficient use of the wider energy system.


The Smart Energy Code Company (SECCo) plays an important role in making that happen.


We support the effective operation and evolution of the Smart Energy Code (SEC) – the regulatory framework underpinning the smart metering system across Great Britain.


Working with organisations across the energy industry, we help ensure the arrangements supporting smart metering remain secure, effective and fit for the future as technology, regulation and consumer needs evolve.


It means our work sits at the heart of some of the most important changes taking place across the GB energy sector.


The Opportunity


As our Smart Metering Technical SME, you’ll take on a senior technical role with the opportunity to influence the integrity and evolution of a system connecting tens of millions of premises across Great Britain.


Reporting to the Director of Technical and Business Architecture, you’ll work at the intersection of technical architecture, security, regulation and industry governance.


You’ll provide independent technical expertise and scrutiny, helping ensure the smart metering architecture remains secure, interoperable and capable of supporting the future needs of the energy system.


? What you’ll be doing


You’ll:


  • Provide expert scrutiny and challenge of technical proposals, implementation plans and architectural roadmaps.
  • Challenge assumptions and proposals from the DCC and other industry participants to help ensure technical solutions deliver value for SEC Parties and consumers.
  • Represent SECCo across key technical and security governance forums, including TABASC and the SEC Security Sub-Committee.
  • Help ensure specifications including SMETS, GBCS and CHTS remain secure and interoperable.
  • Identify architectural and security risks and translate these into practical recommendations.
  • Work through complex system lifecycle challenges spanning communications technology, hardware, firmware and software.
  • Turn detailed technical issues into clear briefings and evidence-based recommendations for the SEC Panel and its Sub-Committees.
  • Support the maintenance and development of the Technical Architecture Document and associated technical documentation.
  • Develop SECCo’s technical presence across the industry through forums, events and speaking engagements.


? What we’re looking for


You’ll bring strong smart metering technical expertise alongside the confidence to scrutinise, challenge and influence at a senior level.


We’re looking for:


  • Expert knowledge of Smart Metering Specifications and systems.
  • An understanding of communications protocols used across SMHAN and SMWAN.
  • Proven experience analysing and challenging complex, large-scale technical proposals.
  • A good understanding of end-to-end security architecture, digital signatures and PKI/SMKI.
  • Familiarity with Smart Energy Code governance and Modification processes.
  • Professional experience within the GB energy or telecommunications sectors.
  • The ability to explain complex technical issues clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, including senior stakeholders.
  • Strong stakeholder management, communication and public-speaking skills.
  • Experience of committee working, ideally including Chairing experience.
  • The ability to balance long-term architectural priorities with immediate technical and operational needs.


You’ll also need to be comfortable providing robust, independent technical challenge while building productive relationships with industry partners.
