About the Position

SkyTruth seeks an experienced Data Visualization & Design Specialist to support the Creative Director in the generation of insights and visual assets that tell compelling conservation stories with SkyTruth’s products, and analyze geospatial data to produce polished maps, graphics and reports using SkyTruth’s datasets and tools. This role combines geospatial data analysis and visualization, graphic design, and journalism.


Making hidden environmental problems visible is the first step to solving them. The ideal candidate will have experience in data analysis and visualization, geospatial mapping, as well as science communication and graphic design. They will be able to produce results quickly, balance competing priorities, and collaborate closely with the Creative Director and SkyTruth’s technical and communications teams to unlock the full value and impact of our products. Above all, they will be motivated to translate data into impact for the conservation community. This role is 100% remote and will report to the Creative Director.


Key Responsibilities

  • Data visualization and mapping. Develop polished maps and graphics for reports, web, slide decks, and social media.
  • Data analysis and communication. Utilize SkyTruth’s products and analyze datasets to produce graphics and create narratives that promote and inspire global conservation.
  • Ensuring brand consistency. Manage some website content production, develop templates, and ensure consistency with brand guidelines.
  • Designing collateral. Create printed and digital promotional materials, collateral, and presentations for conferences and events. 
  • Assisting with UI/UX design. Follow creative direction to design new aspects of the user interfaces and experiences for our various tools.
  • Opportunity identification and exploration. Brainstorm with the team and identify new opportunities to make unique contributions to the conservation space.
  • Continuing education and skill development. Develop and maintain an informed awareness and continued education on important developments in the field.
  • Other duties as assigned


Key Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of graphic design and data visualization experience producing polished visual articles or graphics communicating scientific topics. 
  • At least 3 years of experience mapping geospatial data, ideally utilizing satellite remote sensing data to produce maps for publication.
  • Experience communicating complex scientific ideas for all audiences.
  • Broad knowledge of conservation issues to enable the identification, development, and execution of compelling narratives.
  • Ability to take creative direction, communicate directly, and be receptive and open to feedback.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (English language), especially with general and non-specialist audiences.
  • Able to work and excel independently but strong desire to support, collaborate, and solve problems alongside colleagues and across multiple teams.
  • Ability and desire to keep up with trends in data visualization, mapping, and graphic design.
  • High level of organization while effectively managing multiple tasks.
  • Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time salaried position with an expected salary range of $75,000 - $90,000, with final compensation depending on skills and experience. Location 

SkyTruth is a fully remote organization working across multiple time zones, so working hours may vary according to geography as well as operational and personal needs. Candidates can be located anywhere in the United States and must be able to reliably accommodate meetings across North American time zones. The supervisor for this position is based in the Eastern Time Zone. Periodic travel may be necessary, and team members are expected to attend in-person team retreats that are typically held twice per year.

Our Interview Process

Qualified candidates will be invited to schedule a 60-minute interview with our hiring manager. This may be followed by a 1-2 hour take home exercise to demonstrate data analysis, visualization, and storytelling abilities. Candidates passing this stage will have an additional interview with other members of the SkyTruth team. Reasonable accommodations will be provided as requested by candidates throughout all aspects of the selection process.


Please note that while portions of the interview process will take place in early December, there will be a pause from December 22 through January 2 for the holidays.
