Job Position: Systems Control Technician (HVAC) - Level 3

Location: Carrollton, GA

Pay Rate: $42.00-45.00/HR

Job Summary Overview:

The Controls Systems Technician III is a senior-level technician responsible for advanced installation, programming, integration, and troubleshooting of building automation and HVAC control systems. This role requires expert-level technical skills, leadership abilities, and a strong understanding of mechanical and electrical systems integration. The Controls Systems Technician III serves as a technical resource for field crews, assists with commissioning activities, and ensures all systems are installed, tested, and operating to design intent and customer specifications.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Install, program, and commission control systems, including DDC controllers, sensors, actuators, and communication networks.

  • Diagnose and repair complex system issues involving controls hardware, software, and integration with mechanical systems.

  • Calibrate and configure control devices (temperature sensors, pressure transducers, flow sensors, etc.).

  • Lead and mentor lower-level technicians, ensuring adherence to project plans and safety standards.

  • Interpret wiring diagrams, control schematics, and mechanical plans to ensure proper installation and operation.

  • Configure system graphics, control logic, and network communications (BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, etc.).

  • Work closely with engineering and project management teams to verify design intent and field performance.

  • Perform functional testing, point-to-point verification, and system commissioning.

  • Generate system documentation, reports, and as-built drawings for completed installations.

  • Maintain compliance with OSHA, NEC, and company safety requirements.

  • Interface directly with customers and project stakeholders to resolve issues and ensure satisfaction.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Expert knowledge of building automation systems (BAS), HVAC controls, and electrical-mechanical integration.

  • Strong diagnostic skills with the ability to resolve complex system issues efficiently.

  • Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, control schematics, and wiring diagrams.

  • Advanced understanding of control system networks and communication protocols (BACnet, Modbus, TCP/IP).

  • Experience with software platforms such as Tridium Niagara, Johnson Controls Metasys, Siemens, Honeywell, or equivalent.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and mentoring skills.

  • High attention to detail, organization, and time management.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a field-based environment.

 

Education and Qualifications: (Required and/or preferred)

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Associate degree or technical certification in HVAC Controls, Electrical Technology, or Building Automation preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with commercial or industrial control systems installation and programming.

 

Field of Study:

  • Electrical Technology, Mechanical Systems, HVAC Controls, or related technical discipline.

Certifications and Licenses:

  • OSHA 30-Hour Certification.

  • EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification preferred.

  • BAS manufacturer or platform certifications (Tridium, Siemens, Honeywell, etc.) preferred.

  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • Work performed at commercial and industrial job sites, mechanical rooms, rooftops, and control panels.

  • Exposure to varying temperatures, confined spaces, heights, and electrical hazards.

  • Frequent collaboration with HVAC, electrical, and plumbing trades.

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, climb, kneel, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds.

  • Must be able to work from ladders, lifts, and scaffolding.

  • Manual dexterity to handle electrical tools, wiring, and control components.

  • Requires use of appropriate PPE at all times.
