Primary Purpose

Analyzes project portfolio, competitive landscape and external market to identify potential power generation development leads. Conducts financial analysis/due diligence and prepares documents required to secure approval for developing new and/or acquiring power generation assets. Negotiates terms of agreement for developing power generation projects. Collaborates with internal and external resources (legal, tax, accounting) to negotiate, structure and secure financing for power generation development projects. Typically works on multiple projects/deals simultaneously.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Guides the identification and evaluation of new business prospects in power generation by leveraging in-depth industry knowledge and market analysis.
  • Leads comprehensive financial assessments and due diligence to evaluate the strategic value of new assets or projects.
  • Develops business cases and presentations that articulate the benefits and risks of proposed projects to senior leadership.
  • Leads cross-functional team efforts to develop comprehensive project plans and negotiation strategies for power generation initiatives.
  • Negotiates advantageous terms in project agreements, ensuring they align with strategic objectives and provide ample benefits.
  • Cultivates relationships with key industry players and potential partners to create synergy and drive future development opportunities.
  • Leverages expertise in finance to structure complex project financing solutions alongside legal and accounting teams.
  • Possesses know-how of the California ISO and the Southwestern WECC power regions. Ideally familiar also with the Mexican northwest and other markets.
  • Promotes and adheres to safety throughout the development phase in accordance with Company expectations and all project specific safety rules.
  • Develops projects in accordance with all applicable corporate standards and guidelines. Coordinates activities and deliverables (business cases, cost estimates, schedules, gate review materials, etc.) to successfully advance projects through Sempra's capital allocation process.

Required Qualifications

Education
  • Typically requires a 4 year degree in a relevant field, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Experience
  • Typically requires 8 years of related experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in energy project development, with a focus on utility scale solar and/or battery energy storage projects, including standalone and hybrid PV + BESS configurations.
  • Experience supporting the development phase of projects, including site selection, land control, permitting, interconnection strategy, feasibility assessments, technology screening, and coordination of conceptual designs and third-party studies.
  • Travel may be required to visit project sites (10-20% of the time).

  • Market Analysis - The ability to evaluate and interpret market conditions to identify trends, opportunities, and competitive dynamics in power generation.
  • Financial Modeling - Developing and utilizing complex financial models to forecast potential returns and assess the financial viability of projects.
  • Risk Management - Identifying, analyzing, and implementing strategies to mitigate risks associated with power generation investments and projects.
  • Negotiation - The skill to effectively engage with stakeholders and partners to reach mutually beneficial agreements for power generation developments.
  • Project Management - Planning, executing, and overseeing projects to ensure they are completed on time, within budget, and to specified quality standards.
  • Due Diligence - Conducting thorough investigations and evaluations of potential projects, assets, or investments to assess risks and opportunities.
  • Regulatory Compliance - Understanding and ensuring adherence to legal and regulatory requirements in power generation project development and operations.
  • Energy Economics - Analyzing economic factors that influence energy production and market dynamics, including pricing, supply, and demand.
  • Contract Management - Overseeing the creation, negotiation, and execution of contracts to ensure they align with project goals and organization standards.
  • Financial Reporting - The ability to prepare and interpret financial statements and reports related to power generation business activities for decision-making purposes.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in business or related fields or Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • Familiarity with development level BESS and solar considerations, including early code and standards awareness and coordination with utilities, regulators, consultants, and internal stakeholders, is preferred.
