Are you looking for hands-on experience solving problems related to climate action and energy efficiency within a Higher Education context? As an Energy Management Associate in the Climate Corps Fellowship program, you’ll have the opportunity to build out the energy management program while working collaboratively with professionals across campus, representing a variety of roles and disciplines at the University of Puget Sound. This is an on-site position with the expectation of on-site work up to 5 days per week on site. Occasional evening hours to perform site walks as appropriate, not to occur more than once a month (fellows are encouraged to flex their time).

The Fellow will be responsible for taking existing campus energy management efforts to the next level, including analyzing trends in energy use, researching improvements to data collection methods, and identifying opportunities for energy savings. The Fellow will create outreach materials for students, staff, and faculty on campus to drive behavior change. The Fellow will also have the opportunity to learn about other subjects within campus sustainability, such as climate mitigation and adaptation, managing solid waste, and encouraging sustainable transportation, as time allows. This role offers a meaningful entry point into campus sustainability work, with hands-on experience that can help shape your path in the climate field.

Projects You Will Be Working On Include

  • Ensuring documentation is complete for Clean Building Performance Standard Compliance.
  • As part of a larger asset inventory and O&M Plan development effort, integrating preventative maintenance measures for building systems into an existing work-order system
  • Work as a member of the internal energy team to identify opportunities for energy savings and implement solutions.
  • A student-facing energy efficiency behavior change campaign.

About Our Partner: University of Puget Sound

The University of Puget Sound is an independent, predominantly residential liberal arts college located in Tacoma, WA. Facilities Services at the University of Puget Sound is responsible for the management, maintenance, and operation of all of the university's buildings and grounds, as well as the physical development of the campus. Facilities Services houses the Office of Sustainability, which oversees campus recycling and composting, educational programming, strategic planning related to sustainability, and leads energy efficiency efforts on campus.

What You’ll Do

  • Energy Management:
    • Monitor campus energy use trends and equipment performance.
    • Identify opportunities for energy savings across campus.
    • Participate in TPU and PSE Commercial Strategic Energy Management (CSEM) meetings.
    • Support CBPS Operations & Maintenance Plan and Energy Management Plan development.
  • Research and Data Analysis:
    • Perform research and analysis, develop performance metrics, and monitor and evaluate energy conservation program progress towards efficiency goals.
    • Research and propose improved processes for data collection and management.
    • Assist with updating the 2025 GHG emissions inventory for Scope 1 & Scope 2 emissions.
  • Project Management:
    • Support compliance with WA Clean Buildings Performance Standard, including attending cohort meetings and tracking key deadlines for documentation submission.
    • Support relevant grant application opportunities as they arise.
  • Campus Engagement:
    • Design graphic materials such as emails, stickers, and posters to promote sustainable behaviors.
    • Implement behavior change actions and campaigns to support energy conservation on campus.
    • Provide support for energy-related student capstone projects and research inquiries.
What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree or relevant work experience in energy systems, natural resources, sustainability, environmental science and policy, engineering, or other related fields.
  • Upper-level coursework or capstone project experience in energy management, energy systems, technical data analysis (such as life-cycle analysis), or carbon accounting.
  • Related experience in fields related to energy efficiency, renewable energy, energy management, and/or data analysis.
  • Ability to work independently and carry out assignments, make independent judgments and/or decisions, and discern when action at a higher level is required.
  • Experience working collaboratively.
  • Must be able to effectively manage multiple projects and maintain an organized and well-communicated workflow.
  • Comfort with conducting outreach, including in-person tabling and creating outreach materials.
  • A deep passion for sustainability, with the practical skills and abilities to effect change in complex systems.
  • The ability to work onsite on a full-time basis. This position requires the employee to be physically located within commuting distance of the site location at the time of hire. Only candidates currently residing within commuting distance of the site address will be considered.

  • Authorization to work in the United States for the duration of the fellowship (SEI is unable to sponsor visas).
  • May require occasional moving about to accomplish tasks, moving from one worksite to another, or adjusting or moving objects under 25-50 pounds in all directions.

  • A fixed, monthly stipend of $3950.
  • $1000 end-of-program financial award.

  • Fellows receive 10 personal days for a standard 10-month fellowship (prorated for longer terms), which may be used for vacation or sick time. Additionally, Fellows follow their partner site's holiday schedule to observe the same holidays as their team.

Climate Corps Fellowships are classified under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) as temporary, educational internships that emphasize training and career development, and thus no employment relationship exists, nor compensation is required. However, while not considered traditional employment, Fellows receive a living stipend and professional development support throughout the program.
