About UndauntedK12

UndauntedK12 is a nonprofit whose mission is to support America's K-12 public schools to make an equitable transition to zero carbon emissions while preparing our youth to build a sustainable future in a rapidly changing climate.

Position Overview & Description

UndauntedK12 is clear that if California wants to make good on its decarbonization commitments, it cannot ignore the climate impacts of school infrastructure. California’s approximately 10,000 school buildings are among the state’s largest forms of public infrastructure, and we currently spend about $15 billion annually on school building construction and maintenance. But there is currently little guidance to ensure that those funds are used in ways that reduce the K-12 education sector’s emissions and support California’s goal of economy-wide decarbonization by 2045.

With the support of this fellow, UndauntedK12 will work with partners to launch a California Climate Resilient Schools Coalition, that brings together and aligns myriad organizations invested in putting more attention and resources toward decarbonized and resilient school facilities and grounds. This coalition will work on initiatives that increase the state of California’s clarity on how its school infrastructure spending can improve economy-wide climate outcomes. Further, there are currently K-12 school district leaders ready to take action on climate, but who do not yet have the resources, knowledge, or support to lead the change. This fellow will support UndauntedK12’s efforts to provide guidance and resources to education leaders seeking to make climate-resilient facilities a priority and reality within their districts.

Responsibilities

Support California Climate Resilient Schools Coalition

  • Conduct outreach to existing and potential coalition members, including youth, education, environmental, civil rights, and labor organizations.
  • Provide operational support for coalition meetings, including agenda development and internal communications to coalition members.
  • Create external communications about the work of the coalition, including website updates, emails, and social media.

Resource Development

  • Curate resources for school district leaders on climate-resilient school infrastructure, particularly in the areas of buildings and grounds, mitigation, and adaptation.
  • Develop new tools and resources for school-districts related to climate-resilient school infrastructure

Awareness Building

  • Through targeted communications, build educators and district leaders’ understanding of their roles as climate leaders.
  • Through targeted communications, build climate leaders’ understanding of the role schools can/must play within broader climate strategy.

Policy Analysis

  • Produce issue briefs to build UndauntedK12 and partner understanding of policy proposals, particularly related to school infrastructure decarbonization and climate-resilience.
  • Data analysis related to school infrastructure decarbonization and climate-resilience

Desired Qualifications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly organized and effective project manager
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, nimble, collaborative work environment
  • Working knowledge of key issues within education and climate policy
  • UndauntedK12 is a fully remote organization. This position will work on California-specific issues and with California organizations, so you must be located in California.

Fellowship Experience at UndauntedK12

  • Early access to a team building a movement at the intersection of K-12 schools, climate, and equity.
  • Because UndauntedK12 is focused on both California-specific and national issues, this fellow will gain significant context and insight into national trends.
  • UndauntedK12 is currently a small team, which provides opportunities for this fellow to take initiative and make a substantial impact.
  • Regular check-ins with senior leadership.
