Position Overview & Description
The Fellow will assist with community outreach, data analysis, report preparation, and participation on an interdepartmental team of City staff working on an update of the Climate Action Plan (CAP) and a new Environmental Justice Element of the General Plan. After the CAP is adopted, the Fellow will assist with design and implementation of programs identified in the CAP. These programs may include collaborative projects with StopWaste and East Bay Community Energy, energy efficiency, and building and transportation electrification projects. The Fellow will also have opportunities to assist with a variety of general sustainability projects within the Environmental Services Division.
The City of Hayward is seeking a passionate and driven Fellow to assist with an update of the City’s Climate Action Plan and General Plan. The General Plan update will also include revisions to the Housing and Safety Elements as well as the preparation of a new Environmental Justice Element.
- Design and write content for flyers, social media, and outreach materials
- Assist the City’s internal Green Team with making City facilities and operations more sustainable
- Maintain web pages for the City’s environmental programs
- Write articles for the City’s environmental e-newsletter
- Help maintain the City’s online dashboard of sustainability-related metrics
- Attend community outreach events (some during evenings and weekends)
- Conduct outreach related to climate action, recycling, energy efficiency and renewable energy programs.
- Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree with coursework in sustainability, environmental science, public administration, communications, business administration, biology or a related field.
- Ability to:
- Independently perform a variety of technical duties including research, data compilation and report preparation.
- Write in a clear and professional manner.
- Operate a personal computer utilizing spreadsheet and word processing programs.
- Collect, compile, analyze and present a variety of data in a meaningful way.
- Think critically and offer solutions when appropriate.
- Speak Spanish (helpful, but not required).

Climate Corps AmeriCorps
AmeriCorps is a national service commitment that meets a community’s critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. Bay Area Community Resources and SEI partner to implement Climate Corps AmeriCorps, an award-winning fellowship program that provides professional development opportunities for emerging leaders through implementation of sustainability and resiliency projects with local governments, nonprofits, and educational institutions.
Upon completion of the term, CCAC Fellows receive a Segal Education Award of up to $6,495.00 in return for your service. You can use the award to repay qualified student loans and to pay current educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education and training programs. Fellows who complete a 1700-hour term also receive a California For All Award of $3,505.00 in cash for educational expenses.

AmeriCorps fellows must:
- Be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents
- Have a high school diploma/GED
- Be 17 years old or older
- Pass state criminal and FBI background checks, and a national check in the Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Registry
- Test negatively for tuberculosis if working with minors
- Be vaccinated against COVID-19 or submit to weekly testing
- Live in the state of California
