Position Description

Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation’s largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served. The electric utility industry is going through revolutionary changes in response to climate change and to meet customers' demands for more renewable power choices. This position is part of City Light's Power Supply Division which is responsible for ensuring that City Light can deliver to our customers reliable, affordable, and environmentally responsible energy. The Senior Power Analyst's insights gained through experience, analysis and modeling guide near-term hydro and renewable power operations and long-term power supply strategies.

This position reports to the Senior Manager of Power Operations and Marketing in the Power Management Division.

Job Responsibilities

Here Is More About What You’ll Be Doing

  • Design and perform probabilistic and statistical studies on sources of uncertainty such as climate change, weather, hydrologic conditions, energy prices and power plant operating data.
  • Advance current software or develop new dashboards to facilitate robust and flexible trading strategies related to market and weather volatility.
  • Write clean, well-documented, and efficient code following best programming practices.
  • Act as lead in ensuring forecasting models are run regularly and communicate results to colleagues and management.
  • Prepare ad-hoc program reports regarding City Light's peak load, generation and hydro and temperature data using Excel, SQL Developer, etc.
  • Continuously evaluate impacts of operational changes, equipment upgrades and retirements upon the total loads and resource balance and energy accounting to adapt power system reports accordingly. Collaborate on a streamflow. management strategy for the power marketing team to ensure trading strategy aligns with operational license requirements.
  • Monitor current power market conditions and advise senior management on risks and opportunities related to power supply and marketing strategy.
  • Query, verify, and report operations data related to the utility's sources and uses of energy, generator status, generation and control and planning area information and prepare various mandatory reports for submittal to regulatory agencies.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has:

Experience: Five years experience in power management, utility operations, hydrology, engineering, math, or statistics, or two years experience as a Power Analyst.

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Math, Economics, or other scientific area (Combinations of education, training and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability).

Certification/License: Current valid state issued driver’s license from any US state to be verified prior to start date. Out of state license holders will be required to obtain a WA state license within 30 days of hire.

You will likely be successful in this role if you have some combination of the following experience, skills, and abilities:

  • Advanced degree or education in economics, mathematics, computer science, operations research, power systems, engineering or a related quantitative field (combinations of education, training and work experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.)
  • Solid computer and analytical skills including experience in computer programming and using software such as Python, SQL, Git, R, and VBA.
  • Experience with short-term capacity forecasting and simulation modeling.
  • Knowledge of hydro, renewables, and gas resource fundamentals.
  • Experience in power and/or transmission portfolio performance and analysis.
  • Understanding of energy markets and regional regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of regional energy supply, transmission, resource operations and market issues especially in the Pacific Northwest and CAISO.
  • Excellent teamwork, leadership, and project planning skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely complex planning issues to policy makers, stakeholders, technical audiences and the general public.
  • Ability to manage shifting priorities well and to think strategically about the problems faced by City Light.

Additional Information

The full salary range for this position is $63.93 to $74.37 per hour.
