Step into a career-defining role where your leadership powers the region’s ability to respond to the unexpected. As the driving force behind SPEN’s emergency readiness and business continuity strategies for the North region, you’ll lead the charge in preparing for and responding to major incidents across our electricity transmission and distribution networks in the Central and Southern belt of Scotland.

From shaping robust response plans to ensuring compliance with the Civil Contingencies Act (2004), Ofgem resilience standards, and internal governance, you’ll be at the forefront of safeguarding millions of customers. This is your chance to build resilience, influence regional energy security, and make a lasting impact in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.

What You Will Be Doing

In this high-impact role, you'll be at the forefront of protecting and preparing SP Energy Networks’ North region for the unexpected—while helping drive our journey to Net Zero. As the leader of Emergency Planning across our SPD/T licence area, you’ll ensure our systems are ready to respond to major incidents, regional outages, and evolving risks with confidence and precision.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Leading the development and delivery of emergency response and business continuity strategies across the Central and Southern belt of Scotland.
  • Managing National Power Outage (NPO) readiness and refining disaster recovery processes.
  • Ensuring compliance with Ofgem’s Enhanced Resilience Standards, the Civil Contingencies Act, and internal governance.
  • Coordinating with NESO, NGET, SSEN-T, and other DNOs to minimise risk and maintain network stability during critical events.
  • Designing and delivering emergency exercises and training across Gold, Silver, and Bronze command levels.
  • Acting as SPEN’s primary liaison with emergency services, government agencies, and regional resilience forums.
  • Leading post-incident reviews and integrating cyber resilience and climate adaptation into planning frameworks.
  • Overseeing Emergency Planning interfaces with Control Room, Operational Planning, Real Time Systems, and telecoms.
  • Coaching and developing a high-performing Emergency Planning team, ensuring readiness for regulatory changes and future challenges.
  • Driving strategic reviews, performance management, and organisational change to enhance productivity and service standards.
  • Maintaining readiness of Incident Control Centres and emergency communication systems, providing strategic advice to senior leadership during live incidents.

What You Will Bring

We’re looking for a strategic thinker and leader who’s ready to take on one of the most critical roles in regional energy resilience. If you thrive under pressure and know how to turn complexity into clarity, you could be exactly who we need.

You’ll Ideally Have

  • Strong knowledge of SP Energy Networks’ policies, procedures, and working practices.
  • A solid grasp of health, safety, and environmental legislation.
  • Familiarity with SCADA and network data systems.
  • Operational experience across Transmission and Distribution networks.
  • Proven ability to deliver results without compromising safety, quality, or customer service.
  • A degree in Emergency Planning, Risk Management, Engineering—or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in emergency planning or resilience roles, ideally within utilities or critical infrastructure.
  • Membership in professional bodies like the Emergency Planning Society or BCI (desirable).
  • Strong understanding of UK resilience frameworks including JESIP, CCA 2004, and ISO 22301.
  • Skills in multi-agency coordination and confidence in regulatory engagement.

What’s In It For You

As well as a competitive salary reviewed annually, you’ll enjoy a comprehensive benefits package including:

  • 36 days annual leave
  • Holiday Purchase scheme
  • Share Schemes
  • Payroll Giving and Charity Matched Funding
  • Technology Vouchers
  • Electric Vehicle Schemes
  • Cycle to Work scheme and Public Transport Season Ticket Loans
  • Healthcare options including Dental Insurance, Private Medical Insurance, Health Cash Plan, and annual Health Assessments
  • Life Assurance (4x salary)
  • Access to Savesmart financial wellbeing support
  • Discounts on shopping, leisure, travel, and more
