With plans to see SP Energy Networks (SPEN), part of the ScottishPower Group, look to invest over £5bn in transmission projects across our transmission network in central and southern Scotland by 2030, the Strategic Project team will play a key role in supporting SPEN to work at pace to deliver the transmission network that is required to support ambitions Scottish and UK Government 2030 targets.

SPEN are currently recruiting a Lead Engineer (Cable and OHL) to join the SP Transmission Strategic team to oversee the Engineering Design function for OHL in Strategic Projects. The postholder will manage the design and engineering outputs, including approvals for all SPT Strategic Projects.

This role involves managing engineering interfaces with EPC contractors and OEMs, and ensuring innovative designs for OHL that meets requirements.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Directly lead the delivery of engineering design for Cable and OHL, establishing and implementing Strategic Projects EPC design strategies and processes to ensure consistent consenting and detail design standards.
  • Take full responsibility for developing pre-contract designs and overseeing the technical execution of Cable and OHL systems and associated equipment throughout project lifecycles.
  • Prepare and review Cable and OHL drawings and technical specifications for construction, procurement, and stakeholder engagement, ensuring clarity and accuracy.
  • Define equipment requirements for Cable and OHL, generating inputs for System Construction Authorisation (SCA), Project Technical Specifications, and BETTA documentation.
  • Ensure all specifications, system designs, equipment, and construction practices comply with current legislation, company policies, and operational standards.
  • Lead engineering reviews, governance, and assurance, authorising EPC design calculations, models, reports, and submissions with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Act as the technical interface with Strategic Agreement Framework EPC and OEM contractors, managing design deliverables and driving standardisation across the Strategic Projects Portfolio.
  • Assess and approve EPC contractor engineering documentation, evaluating feasibility and compliance with client requirements, and proactively reviewing design, construction, and commissioning outputs for timely, compliant delivery.
  • Prepare project quality documentation, adhering to all SP Energy Network and client quality processes, and ensure timely submission of deliverables for PQPs.
  • Provide technical assessment of tender submissions, delivering clear recommendations to clients to support informed decision-making.
  • Resolve statutory, land, and consent issues for underground Cable and OHL routes, facilitating project progress and compliance.
  • Lead the technical resolution of site and construction-related Cable and OHL issues, ensuring operational continuity and specification adherence.
  • Deliver expert technical support to Project Development and Project Delivery teams, advising on design, operation, and integration of Cable and OHL equipment and ancillaries.
  • Mentor, manage, and supervise less experienced staff within the department or project team, fostering professional development and capability growth.
  • Identify training needs for new products and technologies, and develop and deliver technical, operational, and safety training packages.
  • Drive industry best practice and technological innovation within the project team and department, evaluating and applying new ideas, equipment, materials, and methods to achieve cost savings, efficiency, and enhanced safety.
  • Collaborate across global multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver integrated, end-to-end solutions.


What You’ll Bring

  • Degree qualified in Engineering discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Working towards membership of a professional institution.
  • Proven significant experience and knowledge in a responsible position in the area of transmission network overhead line, cable and associated equipment engineering.
  • Good inter-personal and communication skills and the ability to form effective working relationships with other individuals, departments and businesses.
  • Ability to implement, apply and promote CDM and Health & Safety best practice in a design environment.
  • Ability to represent departments or project teams regarding cable engineering issues, decisions, standards or industry best practice.
