The ideal candidate will drive architecture, design, and implementation of real-time control firmware for high‑performance power conversion systems, ensuring reliability, safety, and efficiency across diverse applications.

Role Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Technical Expert - Control Firmware Engineer with over 8+ years of hands‑on expertise in developing firmware for Energy Storage Systems power electronics. The ideal candidate will drive architecture, design, and implementation of real-time control firmware for high‑performance power conversion systems, ensuring reliability, safety, and efficiency across diverse applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Firmware Architecture & Development
- Lead architecture, design, and development of embedded firmware in C for MCUs/DSPs (ARM Cortex M0/M4F/M7 32-bit MCU (STM/ NXP/ TI/…) used in BMS, DC‑DC converters, chargers and related systems.
- Develop and optimize real-time digital control algorithms (current/voltage loop control, PID, resonant LLC control, FOC, PFC).
- Implement peripheral drivers, communication stacks, interrupt handlers, real‑time schedulers, and power-mode management.
- Know-how and experience in using peripherals: ADCs, DACs, timers, PWM modules, GPIOs
- Memories: Serial Flash, SD card, e-MMC, RAM
- Super loop, RTOS, Scheduler based designs
- Familiar with typical firmware development environment: IDE, code editors, configuration management, unit testing, debuggers
- Experience in MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, PSIM, or LTspice for control modelling and adjust the control loop parameters. Exporting auto‑generated code from Simulink.
- Power Electronics Firmware
- Design and tune control loops for isolated & non‑isolated SMPS topologies (Buck, Boost, Flyback, LLC, Full/Half Bridge).
- Implement digital compensation, synchronous rectification control, soft‑start/soft‑stop, and advanced protection schemes.
- Collaborate with hardware and power electronics teams to ensure loop stability, EMI/EMC optimization, and robustness under load variations.
- Energy Storage & Battery Systems
- Develop firmware for battery chargers, energy storage converters, and battery management systems (BMS).
- Implement SOC/SOH algorithms, cell balancing, thermal management, and safety-critical features.
- Integrate storage subsystems with power stages and industrial controllers.
- Implement communication protocols: Ethernet, CAN, CAN FD, UART, MODBUS and diagnostic frameworks.
- System Integration & Validation
- Lead board bring‑up activities, hardware‑firmware integration, and real-time debugging.
- Validate firmware using oscilloscopes, power analysers, logic analysers, JTAG/SWD tools.
- Conduct control loop characterization, fault simulation, stress testing, and thermal performance verification.
- Proves design concepts through a combination of computer simulation and physical laboratory implementation/testing.
- Develops automated test cases for Hardware-In-Loop modelling/Testing. (Preferable)
- Safety & Protection Implementation
- Ensure firmware meets safety standards (functional safety guidelines e.g. IEC 61508/ ISO 26262/ IEC 60730/ …)
- Develop robust protection features: OVP, UVP, OCP, OTP, short-circuit protection, shoot-through prevention, derating logic.
- Implement diagnostic data logging, error handling, and system recovery mechanisms for safety-critical environments.
- Support compliance with global safety, EMC, and regulatory requirements.
- Documentation & Process Compliance
- Create design documentation, firmware architecture specs, control algorithms, test reports, and safety analysis.
- Ensure adherence to coding standards (MISRA C), code reviews, version control workflows, static analysis, CI/CD practices.
- Know how and familiarity with cyber security topics like secure boot, authentication, integrity check, PKIs handling, threat model, security level,… (IEC 62443)
- Guide cross-functional teams in HW-FW co-design, power architecture decisions, and digital control strategies.
- Mentor junior engineers in embedded systems, control algorithms, and power electronics fundamentals.
- Evaluate and adopt emerging technology such as GaN/ SiC power devices, new MCU families, digital control libraries, and model-based design (Simulink).
- Architect scalable firmware platforms for next-generation energy storage solutions.
- Act as technical SPOC for project specific reviews (safety, cybersecurity, stage gate, regulatory,)
- Act as technical SPOC to talk to partners, vendors
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering/ Electronics/ Embedded Systems or related field.
- 10+ years of experience in embedded firmware development for power control systems.
- Strong understanding of power electronics, control theory, and real-time embedded systems.
- Hands-on expertise with SMPS/ EV power electronics, and battery/energy storage systems.
- Proficiency with lab tools and debugging equipment.
- Has worked on design of Battery Management Systems (HW/ FW)
- Knowledge of cybersecurity standards e.g. IEC62443
- Scripting experience using Python/ Shell/ others
- Knowledge/ Practical experience with Functional Safety design and implementation (ISO26262/ IEC61508)
- Detail-oriented, organized, deadline-driven
- Demonstrated excellence in analytic, strategic and critical thinking
- Strong communication skills
- Being able to “think out of the box”
- Demonstrated ability to drive issue resolution with speed
- Able to manage competing priorities and deadlines
- Experience working with diverse global team members.
- Any prior experience as Technical Lead (leading at least 2/3 members technically)
- Prior experience with BBUs, chargers, DC-DC converters
- Ability perform stability analysis (Bode plots, Nyquist, root locus, phase margin/gain margin)
- Ability to build plant models, simulate closed-loop behaviour, and validate controller response.
