Utility-Scale Battery Energy Storage | IPP / Developer | USA

We are partnered with a leading Independent Power Producer (IPP) and Developer at the forefront of utility-scale renewable energy and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across North America. With a strong pipeline of operational and in-development projects, they are looking to appoint a Director of BESS Operations to lead the strategy, performance, and long-term optimization of their growing storage portfolio.

This is a high-impact leadership role responsible for overseeing the operational performance, reliability, safety, and commercial optimization of utility-scale BESS assets across multiple markets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all operational activities across a portfolio of utility-scale BESS assets, ensuring safety, availability, and performance targets are consistently achieved
  • Develop and implement long-term operations strategy for standalone BESS and hybrid renewable + storage projects
  • Manage O&M providers, asset managers, EPC partners, OEMs, and third-party service providers across the full operational lifecycle
  • Oversee asset performance analysis, root cause investigations, reliability improvements, and preventative maintenance strategies
  • Drive compliance with NERC, ISO, utility, OEM, and regulatory requirements across operating assets
  • Partner closely with commercial, trading, and asset management teams to maximize project revenue and market participation opportunities
  • Support commissioning, turnover, and operational readiness for new projects entering commercial operation
  • Develop operational KPIs, reporting structures, and continuous improvement initiatives across the portfolio
  • Lead technical responses for warranty claims, major equipment failures, and performance disputes
  • Build and mentor a high-performing operations team as the platform continues to scale

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in power generation, renewable energy, or energy infrastructure operations
  • Strong direct experience managing utility-scale BESS operations is essential
  • Experience within an IPP, developer, asset owner, OEM, or large-scale renewable platform preferred
  • Strong understanding of battery technologies, EMS/SCADA systems, grid services, and asset optimization strategies
  • Knowledge of ISO markets, ancillary services, and energy trading considerations highly desirable
  • Experience managing third-party O&M providers and operational contracts
  • Strong commercial acumen with the ability to balance technical performance and financial returns
  • Proven leadership experience managing cross-functional teams and external stakeholders
  • Excellent communication and executive reporting capabilities
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Energy, or related field preferred
