RMI’s Carbon-Free Building team is seeking an Equity Manager to lead equitable clean buildings policy work, which includes a focus on the role of electrification in decarbonizing homes and buildings in low-income communities. RMI’s Carbon-Free Buildings program seeks to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from U.S. buildings by 2045 through solutions that build a just and equitable energy transition for all. The Carbon-Free Buildings team works though research, technical analysis, communications, policy analysis and advocacy, and collaboration with partner organizations to achieve its goals. RMI is also seeking to share power with traditionally marginalized people in a just, inclusive and meaningful way, working with them to address systemic injustice, inequity and oppression.
The Equity Manager will help the Carbon-Free Buildings team advance equitable building decarbonization in collaboration with external partners, especially those from historically marginalized and underserved communities, environmental justice, and affordable housing focused groups. This is an externally focused policy and campaign development and leadership role, not an internally-focused “DEI” or HR position.
Specifically, the Manager has three core functions, which we will iterate on with time based on the team’s needs and the Manager’s capacities and interests. The Equity Manager will:
1) Develop and lead equitable decarbonization policies and projects in select geographies in collaboration with RMI staff, equity groups and other coalition partners.
- Develop strategies for equitably scaling building decarbonization and affordable housing solutions across the U.S., particularly for low-income renters
- This could include (but not be limited to) helping to create new low-income zero-carbon retrofit pilots or programs, integrating tenant protections within electrification incentives, and other policies that prioritize or protect low-income households in the clean energy transition.
- Initiative, lead and/or contribute to research efforts and publications
- Represent RMI in the media and other public speaking events
2) Support the Carbon-Free Buildings team to more thoroughly integrate equity in our work.
- Advise team leadership on critical areas to expand or adjust team goals, strategies and outcomes to better center equity in our work.
- Support staff in engaging and forming partnerships with equity and frontline groups, developing and carrying out equity goals across the team’s workstreams, and staying abreast of and sharing developments and guidance in the equity and justice space.
- Determine how results will be measured and be accountable for project results, rigorously and respectfully challenging findings from RMI teams and partners.
- Develop external communications materials as needed to support the team’s equity-focused strategies, including products such as blogs, op-eds, talking points, slide decks, and public speaking engagements.
3) Develop and maintain relationships with national equity and environmental justice organizations.
- This could include pursuing partnership and support opportunities and serving as the lead relationship manager with specific partners and stakeholders.
- Support with coalition building
- Funding permitting, manage a budget and make regranting decisions to equity groups
- 5+ years of professional work experience including 1+ year as a team manager
- Experience managing external stakeholder relationships
- Excellent writing and verbal communication and organizational skills
- Prior work or volunteer experience with climate and environmental justice, racial justice, energy justice, or housing justice organizations, including in the affordable housing and tenant rights space.
- Familiarity with energy and climate policy, particularly as it relates to the buildings sector
- Highly collaborative, strong team player
- Willingness to plunge into unfamiliar disciplines
- A passion for RMI’s mission
- Ability to travel 10-20% (once public health conditions allow)
- Experience working directly with policymakers and regulators
- Experience with energy policy and/or advocacy campaigns
The position can be remote or based out of one of our offices in Oakland, CA, Washington, D.C., New York City, Boulder, or Basalt, Colorado.
RMI compensates based on the level and requirements of the role. Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. Typically, new Managers join at the minimum to mid salary range of $103,000-$121,000. You would also have an additional 10% bonus target!
