Staff Controls Engineer, Propulsion
As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.
The Future Programs team exists to expand the definition of Electric Adventure Vehicle with new product and ecosystem solutions. We are specifically focused on addressing local transportation and the outsized impact towards Keeping the World Adventurous Forever that comes with disrupting short, high emission trips.
Responsibilities:- Model, Design, Develop, Validate and Ship control system algorithms and embedded software for lightweight propulsions systems and various user input devices (binary, proportional, etc)
- Example applications include the underlying control algorithms that provide an amazing user experience in terms of throttle feedback and control, regen, braking, gear shifting and interactions between all of the above
- Employ the most effective balance between model based development and empirical development on hardware and with significant user experience testing and iteration
- Setup and develop software toolchains for model based code generation (Simulink) and C code as necessary to balance development speed and compute efficiency objectives
- Contribute to requirements engineering, HIL, SIL workstreams
- Define system regression test cases and pass/fail criteria
- Collaborate closely with mechanical design, electrical design, test and embedded software teams
- 8+ year track record of in-depth control system development accomplishments including launch of large scale products
- Strong engineering fundamentals in the areas of dynamical systems, control theory, high frequency/high bandwidth applications
- Strong understand of rotating machine dynamics, friction, backlash, NVH and controls methods to mitigate
- Strong understanding of BLDC motor control, various input sensors, low level/high speed signal formats as well as over typical network protocols such as CAN and EtherCat
- Deep skill in leveraging Matlab/Simulink/Simscape suite for design and target code generation
- Breadth of previous controls implementation experience that enables you with pragmatism in using control approaches that can be executed on consumer product development time scales
- Knowledge of the constraints and tactics required to develop code sets compatible with resource constrained micro controllers (in addition to rapid prototyping platforms)
- Formal mechanical or electrical engineering education with focus on control system theory, M.S. minimum, higher preferred
Salary Range/Hourly Rate for California Based Applicants: $184,000.00 - $211,000.00 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).
