Staff Dynamics Engineer, Drivability
As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.
Join a high functioning team at Rivian where you will play a critical role in defining the performance of our products. Work hands-on in-vehicle to calibrate and test vehicles against requirements in your domain. From target setting to final validation, you will be fully responsible for a portion of the vehicle performance.
This role offers a unique opportunity to apply first principles thinking to solve complex control problems and to work on cutting-edge propulsion & braking technologies. You will be required to collaborate across Software Controls and Chassis organizations, bringing teams together to solve engineering challenges. You will have the chance to develop robust, real-time solutions, and make significant contributions to Rivian’s mission of creating innovative, efficient, and sustainable transportation systems.
Responsibilities:- You will be responsible for defining how the driver interfaces with the vehicle for accelerating and decelerating
- Drivability is specifically responsible for the following features and domains; Autohold, lash control, torque shaping, pedal mapping, pedal ‘stiffness’, regen calibration and driveline disconnect strategies
- Lead and drive the vehicle-level target setting, calibration and general development of the drivability functions for the program
- Create and organize a development plan to deliver the responsible functions
- Benchmark competitive vehicles, record relevant information and refine Rivian’s target metrics
- Work seamlessly with the Controls team to integrate and test new control algorithms for the aforementioned functions. To do this you will:
- Compile relevant ECU code
- Flash relevant ECUs
- Execute full vehicle OTAs
- Measure, record and debug relevant controllers
- Read through code, find bugs and work collaboratively with Controls Team to develop a solution
- Submit Pull Requests for calibration changes and updates
- Raise Jira bug tickets for issues found, and work with Software teams to drive to resolution
- Utilize full vehicle simulation models to optimize the development of the vehicle platform by running “what-if” scenarios based around dynamic performance
- Create standardized test catalogues and vehicle instrumentation strategies to correlate full vehicle simulation models with physical development properties
- Communicate cross-functionally with the Chassis, Powertrain, Testing and Controls teams to improve the integration of the vehicle subsystems into one harmonized driving experience
- B.S. Degree (or higher) in Engineering (Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering)
- 8+ years experience in Automotive Development or similar industry preferred
- Experience taking data via CAN or XCP on vehicle, analyzing data, correlating with subjective evaluations and turning that into actionable changes to software or calibrations.
- Deep knowledge of control systems, vehicle dynamics and electric powertrains. Previous algorithm development or design is a huge plus
- Strong first principles background
- Be able to work on multiple projects in parallel, and manage progressing topics with little guidance or direction. A track record of delivering on time results is important
- Experience in C, C++, MATLAB, Python, Simulink. Gitlab experience is a plus
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Ability to travel up to 25%
Benefits Summary: Rivian provides robust medical/Rx, dental and vision insurance packages for full-time employees, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26. Coverage is effective on the first day of employment, and Rivian covers most of the premiums.
