About Us:
Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.
Role Summary:
We are seeking a motivated and skilled Test and Automation Software Engineer to join our growing Energy, Storage & Distribution team. This role will be integral to the testing and integration of control software for key vehicle features, including high- and low-voltage battery and thermal control systems. The ideal candidate will have a solid foundation in computer or electrical engineering, with a keen interest in embedded software and a passion for ensuring high-quality products. This position requires a strong commitment to learning and applying software testing best practices, contributing to root cause analysis (RCA) efforts, participating in solution and risk assessments for over-the-air (OTA) updates, and actively contributing to test coverage improvements. This is a domain-oriented position that plays a vital role in validating the performance and reliability of our energy control and distribution software.
Responsibilities:
Participate in the planning, development, and execution of software qualification tests at hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) levels. This includes:
  • Developing and executing automated test scripts using established automation toolsets, following team guidelines.
  • Contributing to the systematic tracking and reporting of software quality gaps, providing data for metrics per OTA release.
  • Assisting in the investigation of new failures with developers to understand technical aspects and contribute to resolution efforts.
  • Contributing to the evaluation of the quality of embedded software at SIL/HIL levels under supervision.
  • Actively working to fix test scripts and identify potential root causes of new failures, including those resulting from developer errors, within assigned tasks.
  • Assisting in the technical investigation of failures and collaborating with developers to understand root causes and suggest areas for test improvement.
  • Providing clear updates on test execution status and progress on assigned tasks to the team.
  • Contributing to the expansion of automated test coverage across SIL, HIL, and other automated test assets, working closely with senior engineers.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s or Master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or software engineering and 0-3 years of related professional experience.
  • 1+ years of experience in an automated test development environment with a basic understanding of system interactions (hardware and software).
  • Strong foundational knowledge of Python and an eagerness to learn and apply software test automation frameworks like Google Test and Pytest.
  • Basic understanding of embedded programming languages C, C++, and a willingness to learn modern languages like Rust/Golang.
  • Familiarity with software release and build processes (git/svn, Bazel/scons, gcc).
  • Exposure to deploying embedded systems to target platforms (Linux, yocto, buildroot, docker, bitbake) is a plus.
  • Basic understanding of microcontrollers.
  • Familiarity with communication interfaces like CAN, LIN, UDS, and DoIP is a plus.
  • Exposure to Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) concepts.
  • Ability to use basic electronic test equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers) for initial hardware-level troubleshooting under guidance.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills with a willingness to learn and collaborate.
  • Familiarity with software revision management control software like Git (local and cloud-hosted systems like GitLab or GitHub).
  • An interest in learning about high voltage battery systems is a plus.
