Substation Design Engineer III - Renewable Energy
ROLE SUMMARY
The Substation Design Engineer III leads early-stage design of high-voltage substations supporting renewable energy interconnections. This role focuses on fast-paced projects requiring rapid turnaround of conceptual and preliminary design packages. This work requires independent judgment, comfort with ambiguity, and the ability to translate client documentation into actionable engineering deliverables. This position is production focused (design execution) and requires confidence in performing hands on design engineering work across both Protection & Controls and Physical substation design deliverables.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Delivery & Execution
• Develop substation design packages for renewable energy substations and/or utility interconnections, including single-line diagrams (SLDs), general arrangements and, as required, three-line diagrams, P&C schematics, and preliminary steel and foundation quantities.
• Translate utility interconnection requirements and client documentation into clear, actionable preliminary design deliverables.
• Adapt designs in fast-paced development environments with limited or evolving information.
• Execute both protection and control (P&C) and physical substation design scope.
• Produce high-quality AutoCAD drawings consistent with Revamp standards.
• Coordinate with civil, structural, and power systems teams to deliver integrated earlystage design packages.
• Review subconsultant deliverables for technical accuracy, quality, and schedule alignment.
• As needed, contribute to detailed, full design tasks for other substation projects within the team.
Client & Stakeholder Coordination
• Support client interaction for multiple projects within a portfolio.
• Present design assumptions and respond to technical feedback.
• Serve as a technical point of contact for early-stage substation scope.
• Coordinate with project managers to align client deliverables.
• Ensure documentation aligns with utility interconnection requirements and client expectations.
Quality & Compliance
• Apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria independently.
• Leverage experienced staff for clear design direction as needed.
• Formulate and solve complex substation design problems.
• Ensure compliance with company, industry, trade, and jurisdictional safety standards, practices, and codes.
• Identify opportunities to improve templates, workflows, and design efficiency.
Additional Responsibilities
• Develop work plans for assigned tasks.
• Provide mentorship to less experienced staff as appropriate.
• Perform essential duties including meeting deliverables and deadlines.
• Perform additional related tasks as assigned.
EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

• Demonstrated experience developing:
o Single-line diagrams (SLDs)
o General arrangement drawings
o Protection & Control (P&C) design documentation
• Working knowledge of high-voltage substation equipment, layouts, and protection philosophies.
• Demonstrated ability to independently evaluate and adapt standard approaches for non-routine development-phase assignments.
• Ability to interpret client documents and extrapolate the required scope with limited direction.
• High level of independence paired with sound judgment to seek guidance when appropriate.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills suitable for client-facing discussions.
• Organized and detail-oriented with the ability to manage fast-turn assignments.
Preferred
• Experience with renewable energy interconnection substations.
• Prior client-facing experience in a consulting environment.
• Familiarity with 3D design tools (such as Inventor).
• Experience supporting both development and EPC delivery phases.
• Coding, scripting, or process automation experience (Python)
• Experience overseeing subconsultants or coordinating multi-discipline inputs.
• EIT certification.
