Structural Design Engineer III (PV Racking Systems)
Role Summary
Revamp Engineering is seeking an Engineer III with expertise in Structural Engineering & PV Racking Systems to serve as a specialist focused on photovoltaic racking foundations. This role focuses on the detailed design, evaluation, and integration of fixed-tilt and tracker racking systems across utility-scale solar and hybrid PV + BESS projects. This role applies advanced structural design knowledge to guide internal teams and clients on optimal racking foundation configurations, structural reliability, and cost-effective solutions. The engineer independently manages multiple projects, mentors junior staff, and collaborates closely with civil, electrical, and procurement teams to ensure robust, compliant, and constructible racking foundation solutions.
Duties & Responsibilities
Focused Technical Scope
- Lead racking-system structural foundation analysis, including wind, seismic, and snow load evaluation per ASCE 7, IBC, and manufacturer criteria.
- Design and verify steel pile foundations for a variety of project sites, considering geotechnical design parameters, environmental conditions, and racking vendor design requirements.
- Review and qualify racking vendor calculations, drawings, and submittals for compliance with project and jurisdictional requirements.
- Support the development of Revamp’s internal design standards, tools, and templates for racking layout and structural modeling.
- Perform independent verification of third-party racking designs to ensure safety, reliability, and code compliance.
- Support auxiliary non-racking PV and BESS equipment foundation design, as required.
Project & Technical Leadership
- Create structural engineering plans, details, and calculations for renewable energy and substation projects.
- Design concrete and steel foundations for project equipment to meet jurisdictional requirements at local, state, and federal levels for a variety of geotechnical parameters and soil types.
- Lead multiple concurrent projects and apply broad knowledge of structural engineering principles and practices to solve complex technical challenges.
- Independently evaluate, select, and apply standard and advanced engineering methods, procedures, and criteria.
- Serve as a primary structural point of contact for project teams within assigned portfolios.
- Coordinate closely with other disciplines (civil, electrical, and project engineering) to ensure full design alignment across project deliverables.
- Prepare project documents, including calculations, specifications, and drawings, ensuring technical quality and compliance with company and industry standards.
- Develop work plans and assign tasks to discipline team members.
- May act as Engineer of Record for the structural scope of work.
Client, Collaboration & Quality
- Represent the structural discipline in internal and external meetings with professionalism and confidence.
- Support client interaction for multiple projects within a single portfolio, providing technical insights and resolving engineering challenges.
- Contribute to proposals for professional services, including scope definition and level-of-effort estimation.
- Provide technical support during procurement, construction, and field issue resolution.
- Mentor and support the technical development of staff engineers.
- Ensure all designs comply with applicable safety standards, codes, and practices, including ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC 360/341, IBC, and NDS.
- Develop or recommend process improvements, tools, or techniques that enhance design efficiency and consistency.
- Perform additional duties as assigned or directed.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- 5 + years of experience in structural engineering with at least 2 + years focused on PV racking system foundation design, ground-mount solar, or similar steel/aluminum structures.
- Ability to evaluate and compare racking system foundations for structural integrity, constructability, and cost efficiency.
- Experience reading and interpreting site studies, geotechnical reports, multi-discipline drawings, and racking manufacture structural loading and layout drawings.
- Proficiency with structural engineering software such as RISA 3D/Foundation, Enercalc, L-PILE, or similar.
- In-depth understanding of applicable design codes and standards (ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC 360/341, IBC, NDS).
- Demonstrated ability to lead small teams or projects, mentor junior engineers, and manage multiple deadlines effectively.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with both analytical and creative approaches.
