Head of Data Science | Lead Data Scientist


Location: Sydney, hybrid | Full-Time


Reqiva is partnering with a growing climate-tech business building an innovative SAAS solution. They are looking for a hands-on experienced Head of Data Science | Lead Data Scientist to lead their development of advanced data science capabilities.

This role sits at the intersection of data science, climate modelling, and geospatial analytics, helping deliver innovative SaaS solutions that generate audit-grade climate metrics and sustainability insights.

You will take ownership of the organisation’s data science strategy, lead a growing team of data scientists and analysts, and develop advanced modelling capabilities to support climate risk analysis, emissions reporting, and land-sector sustainability initiatives.


The Role


As Head of Data Science | Lead Data Scientist you will lead the development of data-driven products and models that quantify climate and sustainability metrics across sectors such as agriculture and land use.


You will work closely with engineering and leadership teams to translate complex environmental data into scalable, production-ready analytics solutions while helping shape the organisation’s long-term data science strategy.


Key Responsibilities


Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and execute the organisation’s data science roadmap and product strategy
  • Identify and prioritise high-impact data initiatives
  • Stay at the forefront of climate analytics, geospatial modelling, and machine learning

Data Science & Modelling

  • Design and oversee development of predictive models and analytics tools
  • Lead work across statistical modelling, machine learning, and geospatial analysis
  • Ensure high standards for data integrity, quality, and reproducibility
  • Develop models addressing areas such as emissions, climate risk, land use change, and carbon sequestration

Team Leadership

  • Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing data science team
  • Support professional development and technical growth
  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with engineering teams to ensure scalable deployment of data science solutions
  • Collaborate across product and business teams to deliver data-driven features
  • Engage with external stakeholders including industry partners, researchers, and clients


Experience Required:


  • Master’s or PhD in Data Science, Environmental Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Machine Learning, or similar
  • 5+ years experience in data science roles, including leadership responsibility
  • Proven experience delivering production-ready data science models


Technical Skills

  • Strong Python programming expertise
  • Experience working with data science libraries such as: NumPy, Pandas, SciPy, Scikit-learn
  • Experience working with geospatial and remote sensing datasets
  • Experience deploying models in cloud environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
  • Familiarity with Git, GitHub, and Docker

Domain Knowledge

  • Experience in climate analytics, sustainability, or environmental modelling
  • Understanding of climate reporting frameworks such as: GHG Protocol, TCFD etc
  • Familiarity with climate data sources and national climate datasets

Nice to Have

  • Experience in agriculture, forestry, land use, or climate technology sectors
  • Experience analysing satellite imagery or remote sensing data
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools
  • Knowledge of climate risk modelling and sustainability reporting frameworks
