2. About the Opportunity:

The Staff Engineer will serve as a technical leader responsible for designing and implementing a scalable, robust data platform that supports scientific capabilities with measurable climate impact. This role will set technical direction and best practices, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and ensure the platform meets evolving industry needs. It is a high-impact position requiring autonomy and influence over the broader technical roadmap.


3. Responsibilities:

Lead design, implementation, and expansion of the data platform, including ingestion pipelines, data warehouse/lakehouse architecture, transformation layers, and data serving infrastructure Define and promote engineering standards, best practices, and architectural patterns for data infrastructure Collaborate with teams to translate data needs into scalable and reliable platform features Make technical decisions on tooling, frameworks, and vendor selection for the data stack Mentor engineers, providing guidance and code review focused on quality and maintainability Identify and address scalability, reliability, and performance bottlenecks Partner with engineering, data science, and business stakeholders to support analytical and operational needs Contribute to planning and hiring to grow the data engineering function


4. Requirements:

Extensive experience in data engineering or platform engineering with a track record of building and scaling data infrastructure Proven ability to design and implement end-to-end data platforms including pipelines and warehouse or lakehouse architectures Deep expertise in at least one major cloud data ecosystem (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and familiarity with modern data stack tools (e.g., dbt, Spark, Airflow/Dagster, Snowflake/BigQuery/Databricks, Kafka) Strong software engineering skills in Python and/or Scala/Java for data systems Capacity to operate at both strategic architectural and hands-on implementation levels Strong communication skills to influence technical direction and align cross-functional teams

Nice to Have: Experience building data platforms in greenfield or high-growth settings Knowledge of data mesh, data fabric, or federated data architecture patterns Experience with data governance, cataloging, and metadata management Background in climate tech, sustainability, or mission-driven organizations


5. Pay Range and Compensation Package:

Salary range: $184,000-$225,000 a year
