Policy & Advocacy Officer - Bioenergy and Resource Recovery

About the job

We're looking for a policy professional to work on REA's work on Energy from Waste, resource recovery and bioenergy — sectors at the heart of the UK's transition to a secure, circular energy system. Leading our Energy from Waste Forum, you'll set the policy agenda, build REA's influence with Government and Parliament, and give the sector a stronger, more confident voice.

Reporting to the Head of Heat and Biomass UK, you'll shape and deliver policy priorities that reflect what matters most to REA's 400+ members, run our quarterly Forum meetings and steering groups, and represent REA to DESNZ, DEFRA, NESO, regulators and industry.

The role also carries real commercial weight — growing membership, unlocking sponsorship and partnership opportunities, and strengthening the value REA offers across bioenergy, Energy from Waste and the wider circular economy. It's a high-profile position at the forefront of one of the most dynamic corners of the renewable energy sector.

About you

You're an articulate, credible policy professional with a genuine passion for resource recovery, bioenergy and the circular economy. You understand how energy, waste and climate policy intersect — and you know how to turn that understanding into influence.

You're confident engaging senior civil servants, MPs, regulators and industry leaders, and comfortable stepping up as a spokesperson and ambassador for the sector. You can translate technical, often complex policy into sharp, evidence-based positions that land with decision-makers.

With a track record in policy development, consultation responses and coalition-building, you know how to bring members with different priorities to a shared position — and turn that consensus into results. You're commercially minded too, spotting opportunities to grow membership and income alongside policy impact.

A natural self-starter, you're energised by a fast-moving agenda and comfortable juggling multiple workstreams, forums and deadlines at once.

Personal Characteristics

Enthusiastic, detail-focused and highly organised, with the determination and stamina to keep multiple priorities moving. A flexible team player with strong personal integrity and the confidence to build relationships with civil servants, politicians, regulators and wider stakeholders. Comfortable stepping into the spotlight as a spokesperson and leader for the sector, while staying close to the detail of policy and regulation.

Qualifications and knowledge areas

Likely educated to postgraduate level in a relevant field, or with equivalent experience, alongside solid knowledge of renewable energy and clean technology — with specific expertise in Energy from Waste, bioenergy, resource recovery or the circular economy. You'll likely have several years' experience in the sector already, and be recognised as a credible, respected voice within it or a related field.
