BACKGROUND

The Rainforest Alliance is an international non-profit organization working in more than 70 countries at the intersection of business, agriculture and forests. The Rainforest Alliance is creating a more sustainable world by using social and market forces to protect nature and improve the lives of farmers and forest communities. By bringing farmers, forest communities, companies, and consumers together it addresses some of the most pressing social and environmental challenges of today.

To advance the transition towards sustainable and regenerative agriculture, it is crucial to increase the adoption of more environmentally friendly agricultural practices. For the Rainforest Alliance, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a vital component of a regenerative agricultural sector, and part of a climate-smart and a holistic approach to ecosystem management. Our IPM strategy aims to help farms develop robust plans to control pests by balancing the functions of the agroecosystem, improving ecosystem resilience, and by doing so, reducing dependence on pesticides. The overall objective of IPM is to reduce pesticide use and safe, responsible, and efficient use of agrochemicals through increased adoption of IPM.

In Vietnam, IPM is one of the most important farming practices in coffee, tea and pepper plantation. In other words, IPM practices not only help farmers obtain sustainable farming but also to produce safe-friendly products to meet market requirements.

In order to support coffee, tea and pepper farmers in Vietnam to adopt IPM practices, the Rainforest Alliance is partnering with the Global Alliance on Health and Pollution (GAHP), as a subgrantee, to conduct a three-year project, on pesticide use and alternatives in Vietnam. The project is funded by the UK Department of Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), under the funding from the UK’s International Climate Finance (ICF) program, which supports developing countries to respond to the challenges of climate change.

The main objectives of this project are to provide a valuable opportunity to investigate and address the main barriers to IPM that result in pesticide misuse/overuse among smallholders and larger industrial farms in Vietnam. In specific, the project will:

1. Build a knowledge base on the current state of IPM adoption and pesticide use practices in Vietnam and their impact on environmental and human health;

2. Identify viable alternatives to pesticide use, especially the use of HHPs, and assess barriers to their uptake;

3. Develop contextualized training materials and programs and investigate the impact of training on best practice implementation; and

4. Feed these learnings back into policymaking to create a policy environment that supports IPM adoption.
