Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Urbanism to join School of Architecture and Built Environment, Faculty of Engineering.

The Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Urbanism will be strongly engaged in research and teaching regarding the design of cities, towns, and communities, focusing on how their physical structure, infrastructure, and public spaces affect social, economic, and environmental life. The successful candidate will be strongly engaged in School’s Built Environment education program and in leading research on transport, mobility, land use planning and design. The position requires a highly motivated academic with a passion for innovative teaching and delivering research outcomes that substantially address local and global issues of significance, such as addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and responding to climate change and inequality.

What You Need To Succeed

 Level B

  • Completion of a PhD in Urban and Regional Planning or equivalent accreditation or standing. Expertise in teaching and research in one or more of the following areas relevant to urban and regional planning, sustainability and justice will be highly regarded: transport, mobility, land and land use systems, structural planning, environmental design, and/or urban and environmental justice. Membership (or eligibility to become a member) of the Planning Institute of Australia and demonstrated expertise as a practicing Urban or Regional Planner will also be regarded favourably.
  • Experience or the potential to initiate, lead, develop and maintain a successful research program in urban and regional research that extends and complements the research strengths in the School of Architecture and Built Environment.
  • Demonstrated track record in high-quality teaching within the Urban and Regional Planning discipline including an ability to develop scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning and a demonstrated capacity to teach classes in the professionally oriented Urban and Regional Planning
  • Experience, or the potential, to initiate and build networks and productive partnerships with industry, professional associations, government or community groups in research and teaching.
  • Demonstrated ability to embrace and participate in change to improve personal and organisational effectiveness, cooperate and collaborate well with others in a team with diverse backgrounds and expertise including cross-disciplinary collaborations. Evidence of cultural awareness and respectful engagement with First Nations colleagues and communities, including the capacity to respond constructively to feedback and support the integration of guidance into teaching, research, or professional practice will be regarded favourably.

Level C

  • Completion of a PhD in Urban and Regional Planning or equivalent accreditation or standing. Demonstrated expertise and track record in teaching and research in one or more areas relevant to urban and regional planning, sustainability and justice will be highly regarded: transport, mobility, land and land use systems, structural planning, environmental design, and/or urban and environmental justice. Membership (or eligibility to become a member) of the Planning Institute of Australia and demonstrated expertise as a practicing Urban or Regional Planner will be regarded favourably.
  • Effective leadership in the successful development and delivery of research projects. Demonstrated experience initiating, developing and maintaining excellence in research demonstrated by high-quality publications, success in attracting competitive external research funding, and successful supervision of student research projects including PhD completions.
  • Demonstrated track record in high-quality, real-world teaching (including unit and course coordination) including an ability to develop scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning and a demonstrated capacity to teach classes in the professionally oriented Urban and Regional Planning
  • Demonstrated networks and experience in leading the development of impactful partnerships with industry, professional associations, government or community groups in research and teaching.
  • Demonstrated capacity to lead and embrace change to improve personal and organisational effectiveness, cooperate and collaborate well with others in a team with diverse backgrounds and expertise including cross-disciplinary collaborations. Experience in engaging with First Nations colleagues and communities in ways that value Indigenous authority, including responding constructively to feedback and embedding that guidance into teaching, research, or leadership practice will be regarded favourably.
