Director, Software Product Strategy

Description Director of Software Product Strategy leads the software product portfolio within the residential energy ecosystem, overseeing products such as the Installer commissioning app and portal, Fleet Manager, Homeowner mobile app, API services, and grid services software enabling Virtual Power Plant (VPP) and other energy services. This role defines the vision for how software enhances and differentiates our energy solutions, implementing an ownership model inspired by "Single-Threaded Owner" principles where each major software product has clear, focused leadership. The Director ensures our software offerings provide a seamless, integrated experience for installers and homeowners while unlocking new value streams such as grid services and virtual power plants, driving customer engagement and business growth. The position is based in San Francisco or Santa Clara, California, with 20% business travel.
- Define an ambitious vision and strategy for the suite of software products that support our energy solutions.
- Develop a clear roadmap for each major software offering from mobile apps to cloud-based monitoring, analytics, and grid integration services, ensuring it addresses customer needs and stays ahead of competitors.
- Implement a "Single-Threaded Owner" model, assigning dedicated product owners for key software products or features and mentoring them to take end‑to‑end ownership.
- Act as the chief product liaison with software engineering, UX/UI design, and CS teams, translating product requirements into development plans and staying deeply involved in the software development lifecycle.
- Ensure engineering efforts remain tightly aligned with product goals, coordinating with firmware/hardware teams for features that span hardware‑software interfaces.
- Engage with installers, homeowners, and other end users to gather feedback, identify pain points, and translate industry trends into innovative software requirements.
- 12+ years of product management experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role, focused on complex software or cloud‑based services in energy management or IoT software.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Strong understanding of modern software development practices (cloud architectures, APIs, agile methodologies) and ability to engage with architects and engineers on technical trade‑offs.
- Deep grasp of the energy industry’s software aspects, including home energy monitoring, installer operational software, and grid services platforms such as VPP, demand response, and net metering.
- Proven success in setting a strategic vision for software products and driving execution to achieve measurable results.
- Experience managing and mentoring product managers or product owners, inspiring a high‑performance culture and delegating ownership while maintaining oversight.
- Excellent collaboration skills in a matrixed environment, synthesizing input from design, engineering, data science, marketing, and operations.
- Strong proficiency in analyzing product data, using metrics to guide decisions, and familiarity with product analytics tools and A/B testing frameworks.
- Adaptability and continuous curiosity regarding emerging technologies such as AI, edge computing, UI/UX trends.
- Understanding of North American solar and ESS market dynamics and regulatory frameworks.
- Direct experience at a company that develops software for solar/energy.
- Experience implementing an STO‑type model and driving focus and ownership in a product team structure.
- A strong eye for user experience and design, with experience collaborating with UX teams or conducting user research.
- Experience building products for developers or engaging with open‑source communities, if APIs and integrations are part of the scope.
- Deep knowledge of PV, Microinverter, ESS, fleet management, API, and grid integration technologies.
- Experience in strategic planning, product commercialization, or sales in the North American solar and ESS market.
