Waste Services Officer - Maribyrnong City Council
About Maribyrnong
Just six kilometres west of Melbourne’s CBD, Maribyrnong is one of Victoria’s most diverse and dynamic municipalities. With a population of over 100,000, the City is known for its cultural vibrancy, strong community spirit, and rich mix of residential, commercial, and industrial areas.
Council is dedicated to creating an inclusive, sustainable, and connected community. With a commitment to innovation and bold action, Maribyrnong is leading the way in tackling climate change and embedding sustainability across its services. This includes major investment in waste reform, sustainable transport, and urban renewal projects that aim to improve liveability and reduce environmental impacts.
As part of this commitment, the Waste Services team is playing a pivotal role in delivering the Towards Zero Waste Strategy and preparing for the introduction of Victoria’s legislated 4-bin system by 2027. For people joining the team, it’s an opportunity to contribute to city-shaping change with long-term community benefits.
About The Role
Reporting to the Team Leader – Waste Services & Resource Efficiency, this role is responsible for managing Council’s external waste service contracts and supporting effective, compliant service delivery.
You will monitor contractor performance against KPIs, ensure compliance with contract management plans, manage day to day operations, including service disruptions and incidents, and respond to complex customer and stakeholder enquiries. The role also involves reviewing Waste Management Plans, supporting financial and asset management activities, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives across the service.
This is a hands-on operational role that works closely with contractors, internal teams and the community to ensure waste services are delivered safely, consistently and in line with Council standards.
About You
You bring experience in waste services, contract management or operational service delivery, ideally within a local government or regulated environment. You are comfortable working in the field, confident with dealing directly with customers and have the ability to investigate issues, problem solve and close out on complex cases in the interest of Council and customers.
With strong communication skills and a practical, solutions-focused mindset, you can manage competing priorities, build positive working relationships and deliver outcomes that balance compliance, customer service and operational efficiency.
