Coordinator Environmental Sustainability
About Maribyrnong City Council
Maribyrnong City Council is a progressive inner-west municipality with a strong commitment to sustainability, community wellbeing and inclusive growth. Serving one of Melbourne’s most diverse and dynamic communities, Council is focused on delivering meaningful environmental outcomes while working collaboratively across the organisation and with the community.
About The Role - Coordinator Environmental Sustainability
Reporting to the Manager City Sustainability, the Coordinator Environmental Sustainability leads Council’s Environmental Sustainability team and plays a central role in strengthening how sustainability is integrated across the organisation. This is a people-focused leadership role with a strong emphasis on organisational influence, change management and internal collaboration. While technical credibility in sustainability is important, success in this role will be driven by your ability to work constructively across Council, develop and support a high-functioning team, and translate strategy into practical and achievable outcomes.
The role has a particular focus on supporting the review and refresh of Council’s Climate Emergency Strategy, ensuring the next phase of work is well understood, well governed and genuinely owned across the organisation. You will provide clear, pragmatic advice to senior leaders and decision-makers, helping balance ambition with delivery confidence, while supporting the integration of sustainability considerations into planning, capital works, operations and service delivery. A key part of the role is fostering a positive, encouraging and collaborative team culture, providing clarity, support and leadership to a multidisciplinary group working across both internal and community-facing initiatives.
This position is less about being a single-issue advocate and more about being an effective connector and enabler, someone who can bring people along, build trust, and help sustainability work in practice within a complex local government environment.
About You
You are an experienced people leader with a background in environmental sustainability, climate change or a related field, and you are comfortable operating in complex, multi-stakeholder organisations.
You bring a demonstrated ability to lead and support teams, particularly through periods of change or renewed direction. Your approach is pragmatic and solutions-focused, with a strong appreciation of how sustainability is delivered in a local government or similarly regulated context.
You are a confident communicator with well-developed relationship-building skills and the ability to engage effectively with a broad range of internal stakeholders. You balance strategic thinking with practical implementation and are motivated by enabling others to succeed. Experience in local government is highly regarded, particularly where it involves climate strategy, organisational change or sustainability integration initiatives. Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline are required.
To Apply
If you are a supportive and capable leader who is motivated by helping Maribyrnong deliver sustainability outcomes together, we encourage you to apply.
Please submit your CV and a cover letter outlining your interest and suitability for the role. For a confidential discussion, contact Marcel Lafontaine at Public Sector People on 0423 668 753 or via marcel@publicsectorpeople.com.au.
