JOB TITLE: SOLAR ESTIMATOR

 

REPORTS TO: PROJECT MANAGER

 

JOB PURPOSE: The Solar Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates for solar energy projects, ensuring that bids are competitive and financially viable. This role involves reviewing project specifications, conducting site assessments, analyzing labor, materials, and equipment costs, and collaborating with project managers, engineers, and clients to develop winning proposals.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Estimating & Proposal Development

  • Review project plans, specifications, and requirements to understand scope and deliverables.
  • Conduct site visits and assessments to gather necessary data for accurate pricing.
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and other project expenses.
  • Analyze bids from vendors and subcontractors to ensure competitiveness and compliance with project requirements.
  • Develop comprehensive bid packages and proposals for clients.

Cost Analysis & Risk Assessment

  • Identify potential cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality.
  • Evaluate project risks and factor contingencies into estimates.
  • Maintain accurate records of historical project costs for benchmarking and future estimates.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with project managers, engineers, and sales teams to refine proposals.
  • Communicate clearly with vendors and subcontractors to obtain accurate pricing and delivery timelines.
  • Participate in client meetings to present and explain cost estimates when needed.

Process Improvement

  • Stay current with industry pricing trends, technologies, and best practices.
  • Recommend improvements to estimating processes, tools, and templates to enhance efficiency and accuracy.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience

· High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or related field preferred.

· 3+ years of experience in estimating, preferably in solar, renewable energy, or electrical construction.

Skills & Competencies

· Strong understanding of solar PV systems, components, and installation processes.

· Proficient in estimating software, MS Excel, and project management tools.

· Excellent mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

· Strong communication and negotiation abilities.

· Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, schematics, and specifications.

General

• Fluent in English: Speaking, Understanding, Reading and Writing.

• Be a problem­ solver who has a demonstrated ability to overcome challenges with creative solutions

• Detail oriented with strong organizational skills.

• Working knowledge of Spanish is desirable, but not required.

Working conditions:

· Fast-paced environment requiring flexibility, adaptability and resilience in a wide variety of work situations.

· Nature of business results in many tight or continually changing deadlines.

· General exposure to outside environmental elements, with low to medium noise, exposure to heat and cold.

· Work performed at active construction sites, requiring proper PPE at all times.

· May require travel to various job sites.

· Extended hours, weekends, and overtime may be required based on project needs.

 

PHYSICAL & WORK REQUIREMENTS

· Ability to conduct site visits, including climbing ladders and working in outdoor environments.

· Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer.

· Travel to job sites and client meetings as needed
