Annual Starting Salary: between $90,000 - $140,000

Position Overview

NorthX is seeking an Investment Associate or Principal (depending on experience) to join our investment team. This individual will play a key role in building Canada’s leading climate hard tech platform.

As an Investment Associate/Principal, you will work across NorthX’s capital pools to support and finance early-stage technologies at the forefront of decarbonization, electrification, and industrial transformation. We’re looking for someone with strong intellectual curiosity, an entrepreneurial mindset, sound and independent judgement, and a driven motivation to advance climate solutions.

The ideal candidate operates with urgency and takes ownership over their work, proactively navigating ambiguity with confidence, and is comfortable underwriting thoughtful, well-resoned risk in pursuit of transformative climate solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Deal Sourcing

  • Stay abreast of market, technology, investment, and policy trends to help shape NorthX’s strategic investment priorities (e.g., decarbonization, energy storage, grid optimization, critical minerals).
  • Proactively source and evaluate early-stage hard tech companies aligned with NorthX’s investment thesis.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships across the industry ecosystem to enhance access to high-quality deal flow.

Due Diligence & Deal Execution

  • Rapidly develop domain expertise in emerging sectors and lead thorough, high-quality due diligence processes.
  • Conduct technical, financial, and commercial assessments across both of NorthX’s capital pools (grants and investments), leveraging external experts as needed.
  • Prepare clear, concise investment memos and present recommendations to the investment committee.
  • Lead or support the negotiation and structuring of investment and funding agreements.

Portfolio Support

  • Develop trusted, value-added relationships with portfolio companies and contribute to their growth and success.
  • Monitor investment performance, including milestones, KPIs, and reporting requirements.
  • Leverage networks across climate, hard tech, and investment ecosystems to create strategic opportunities for portfolio companies.
  • Represent NorthX as a credible and engaged ambassador at industry and ecosystem events.

Core Competencies And Qualifications

  • Associate: 3–4 years of experience in venture capital, private equity, investment banking, or a related field.
  • Principal: 5+ years of experience in venture capital, private equity, or investment banking, with demonstrated deal leadership experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, finance, or a related discipline.
  • Proven track record across the full investment lifecycle, including deal sourcing, due diligence, execution, and post-investment support.
  • Strong financial modeling and analytical capabilities, including evaluating company projections, valuation methodologies, and cap table dynamics.
  • Sector expertise in decarbonization, clean fuels, battery energy storage, critical minerals processing, or industrial solutions is considered an asset.
  • Experience operating within a startup environment in a related field is highly valued.
  • Ability to prepare and present clear, concise investment materials for investment committees.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders, including senior executives.
  • High attention to detail and ability to deliver quality work under tight timelines.
  • Experience using AI tools responsibly to support research, due diligence, and workflow efficiency.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities independently in a fast-paced, lean environment.
