We are building something the world has never seen before: premium wood, grown without cutting down a single tree. Our technology enables growing strong hardwood directly from cells. What normally takes decades, we produce in days — precise, strong, and without deforestation.

We are an early-stage biotechnology company on an audacious mission: becoming the world’s largest supplier of wood and making deforestation economically obsolete. If we stopped cutting down all trees today, we would reduce our global carbon emissions by up to 10%. Our rainforests are critical ecosystems in our fight against climate change. Yet we are losing more and more of it at an alarming rate. At New Dawn, you’ll help build next-gen wood that will transform entire industries, while quietly preserving the world’s forests.

This is our Team

It sounds beautiful. And it is. But behind this idea, you will find no romance — just disciplined execution. The day-to-day of changing the world we live in is complex, technical, and very hard work. That is why New Dawn is propelled forward by a team of tenacious and extremely dedicated individuals. We all come here to do the best work of our lives. We are a small team by design, where everyone carries real responsibility. This means we do not operate like a family, but rather like a high-performance athletics team geared towards winning the championship, together.

This is our Culture

Our culture is simple: high standards, low ego. Every day we show up with intention, and aim to be more effective than the day before. This takes continuous reflection and collaboration as a team. We reflect, evolve, and repeat.

If you are looking to solve hard challenges with the brightest people in the field, and work on solutions that have the potential to change the world we live in, you will find your peers here.

You Will Fit Right In If You

  • Are energized by collaborating with a team of crazy intelligent & driven individuals
  • Are excited about solving some of the toughest problems of our time
  • Your brain reasons from first-principles, and bombards you with creative solutions
  • Want to actively build & shape a sustainable future

This Is Not For You If

  • You are looking for clarity in structure, processes and role boundaries in a company that is still being built
  • You are looking to maximize comfort over growth

The Opportunity

This is an extremely hands-on role for someone who wants to help build a material that transforms entire industries and combats industrial deforestation. Your main focus will be on tuning of the material properties. It is a unique opportunity with a lot of creative autonomy.

Through iterations your work will focus on tuning properties like strength and color of the worlds first ever cultured wood. These prototypes will be small and geared towards high-end applications. The work of our plant biologists, geneticist and biophysicist will all converge in your hands, into tangible prototypes. The learnings we gain here will flow back to the rest of the team. Your work can make or break New Dawn’s technical progress.

This is not a classic job. It is a unique opportunity to make real-world impact, while being an early contributor and a part of a strong and dedicate team.

What You’ll Do

  • Tackle our toughest challenges ranging from tuning the lignin/cellulose ratio in our cells, modeling fluid dynamics, to designing bioreactors.
  • Identify and test various strategies to tune the strength and color of the material.
  • Work directly with a multidisciplinary and top-tier team of engineers with expertise in biology, bioprocessing, and engineering.

Who We’re Looking For

We are seeking an individual with a strong understanding of both physics and biology, who can effectively bridge the two disciplines. You will explore a large variety of solution spaces, design and run experiments. In a lot of ways, we are looking for a “full-stack” biotechnologist that has:

  • A hands-on builder mindset, rooted in a strong understanding of physics
  • A MSc degree in physics, biophysics, biomechanics, polymer science, or a related field.
  • Affinity with cell biology
  • Roughly 5-10 years of working experience in the field of biophysics.

Although not required, we do consider it bonus if you have:

  • Experience with the design of bioreactors and/or microfluidics devices
  • Experience with plant cell walls or biopolymers like lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose.

Application

Our culture is not for everybody, and that is by design. Each and every one of us comes here to do the best work of our lives. We are not a family, but rather a high-performance athletics team geared towards winning the championship, together.

If you have made it this far, and the role still excites you, apply through our Notion job board to share with us: why New Dawn and why this role, along with your LinkedIn profile. We value clarity of thinking, authenticity, and genuine motivation — not polished buzzwords. We value diversity, and strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented groups to apply.
