Earth Finance is hiring an experienced Data Engineer to guide the development of the company’s geospatial data pipelines for their flagship product, SpatiaFi. SpatiaFi is a cloud-based geospatial intelligence platform that integrates Earth data and changing planetary systems with economic and asset data to inform decision making. SpatiaFi is built on Google Cloud and has previously won the Google Cloud Sustainability Solution of the Year.


This is a full-time role. We prefer candidates based in Seattle, WA, but are open to a remote position for the right applicant.


What you’ll do:


You will be responsible for growing and expanding SpatiaFi’s foundational data pipelines and frameworks for ingestion, management, and delivery of high-impact geospatial data for a broad range of applications. We are looking for someone who can develop reliable cloud geospatial data infrastructure that scales sustainably with our company’s growth.


Reporting to the Head of Spatial Finance, your responsibilities will include:


  • Maintain data engineering best practices to enable solutions delivery for Earth Finance’s customers
  • End-to-end operations of the company’s geospatial data, including:
  • Ingestion and documentation of new datasets
  • QA/QC and metadata management of existing datasets
  • Responsibility for integrity of delivered data
  • Development, documentation and hardening of internal data management and indexing systems
  • Development of automated data integrity tests and QC pipelines
  • In partnership with Earth Finance’s science team, operationalize new data pipelines, introduce any additional or new beneficial tools, and promote efficient techniques
  • Support Earth Finance’s business and sales teams to identify and deliver data needed to support new commercial opportunities
  • Prepare documentation for both internal and external stakeholders


Required Skills & Experience


Technical:


  • Advanced knowledge of cloud geospatial data engineering
  • Advanced knowledge of common geospatial data types: both raster (GeoTIFF/COG/ZARR/NetCDF/GRIB) and vector (GeoParquet/SHP/GeoJSON/others)
  • Development experience in Python - either a computer science or scientific computing background or demonstrated professional experience in team-oriented software development using GitHub or other source control systems
  • Expertise with common geospatial and scientific Python libraries: GDAL, Rasterio, GeoPandas, NumPy, SciPy, and others
  • Direct experience working with tabular data and building advanced SQL queries with Google BigQuery
  • Experience or background in any of the following: Dask, ZARR, STAC, data visualization, remote sensing, meteorological data production
  • Experience working with Google Cloud tools and infrastructure
  • Experience with Docker or other containerization technologies


Functional:


  • Successful candidates will have 5+ years of experience as a senior or lead data engineer. Candidates with experience working in a start up environment, familiarity with sustainability consulting, and demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership to a multidisciplinary team including remote-sensing scientists, financial analysts, and consulting practice teams preferred.
  • Subject matter expertise in geospatial data sets and sources
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to guide technology teams to generalize, future-proof and minimize technology debt
  • Ability to read, understand and work with code written by others
  • Ability to work in a structured environment with planned development cycles, while being agile to adapt to changing customer or project needs that arise
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent training and / or experience) is required.
  • Comfort with ambiguous, ever-changing situations and the nature of start-ups / young businesses
  • Competent and comfortable with the Microsoft Office Suite, Google products, Salesforce, AI tools, and data visualization tools

Compensation and Benefits:


  • Salary range for this role is $150,000 - $175,000. Title and salary offered will be commensurate with your experience.
