About the job

We are seeking a Backend Software Engineer to join our mission-driven team dedicated to mitigating climate change through innovative technology solutions. In this role, you will leverage cutting-edge technologies to build and maintain live services, transforming promising ideas into impactful, real-world products.

We are looking for an engineer with solid foundational skills, coupled with a passion for continuous learning and the ability to quickly pick up new tools and programming languages.

In the immediate term, you will contribute to the development of projects such as solar nowcasting for electricity system operators, wind forecasting, and estimating solar generation. These initiatives involve working with extensive datasets, including weather forecasts, satellite imagery, and real-time electricity generation time-series data.

You will collaborate closely with the entire Open Climate Fix team, primarily based in the UK, across a range of products, from data engineering and backend development to validation and implementation. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to and engage with the open-source community as part of your work.

Role Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Develop and maintain a range of microservices using Python.
  • Build, monitor, and enhance data collection systems to ensure reliable and timely data pipelines.
  • Collaborate with the Machine Learning team by running forecast models and delivering results to end-users.
  • Participate in our tech-on-call rotation, helping to monitor a live production system, triage issues, and implement real-time solutions.
  • Contribute to the upkeep and optimization of our SQL database infrastructure.

About You

You’re someone who:

  • Is driven by a passion for addressing climate change and contributing to the reduction of global carbon emissions.
  • Has 2 years of relevant experience in industry or academia (if pursuing a graduate degree).
  • Is a self-starter, capable of working independently while also being a strong team collaborator.
  • Has hands-on experience supporting production systems and is comfortable troubleshooting real-world technical challenges.
  • Possesses strong proficiency in Python and Git.
  • Enjoys working within a cross-functional team that spans research, back-end, and front-end development.

Bonus Skills (Nice to Have)
  • Experience with front-end development, particularly using React.
  • Familiarity with multi-dimensional data structures, e.g. use of the zarr storage format.
  • Knowledge of data orchestration tools like Airflow, and experience working with cloud infrastructure tools such as Terraform.
  • Exposure to modelling and analysis involving electricity data or time-series data.
  • Experience with, and particularly contributions to, open-source projects and open-source communities.

Studies show that applicants from diverse and historically under-represented backgrounds are less likely to apply to a role unless they meet all of the hiring guidelines or qualifications. At OCF, we are looking for people who are genuinely passionate about developing climate solutions and actively encourage applicants from all backgrounds to apply. If you feel like you have the potential to do well in this role and your values align with our mission, we encourage you to apply as you might just be the candidate for the job.

Benefits

  • Competitive Compensation: 20-25 LPA (based on experience and skills).
  • Flexible Working: Fully remote working.
  • Work-Life Balance: Working hours align with the Indian time zone.
  • Professional Autonomy: High degree of independence in work delivery.
